2013 CAA Preseason Coaches Poll

CAA LogoRICHMOND, Va. (January 23, 2013) – UNCW, which captured its third CAA baseball championship in the past nine years last season, has been picked to win the conference title again in 2013 according to a vote of the league’s head baseball coaches.

The Seahawks received five first-place votes and finished atop the poll with 75 points. Hofstra picked up three first-place votes and was second with 69 points. James Madison was chosen third with 62 points and Delaware got two first-place votes and was fourth with 57 points. George Mason placed fifth in the voting, followed by Old Dominion, William & Mary, Towson, Northeastern and Georgia State. Read the rest of this entry »

NCBWA releases National Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 29, today. Southeast Missouri sophomore outfielder Derek Gibson was named National Hitter of the Week, while Northeastern junior left-hander Kevin Ferguson was named National Pitchers of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. Read the rest of this entry »

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team scored seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam by Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.), en route to a 12-1 victory over Richmond Wednesday evening in front of 3,128 spectators at Davenport Field. 2011 Beanpot Baseball Semifinals Recap

Foley’s Quick Hits for March 29th

Here are some of my thoughts from college baseball action that took place on March 29th.

  • Congrats to Will Roberts of Virginia for throwing a perfect game on Tuesday against the George Washington Colonials. Roberts struck out 10 batters getting three flyouts and 14 groundouts. The perfect game was only the 19th in NCAA Division 1 baseball history at any length and the first by a UVA pitcher in school history. It was also the first in Division 1 since 2002. Interesting enough, the second to last sentence of the George Washington press release is the first mention they make about the perfect game being tossed.  Read the rest of this entry »

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Will Roberts (Jr., Richmond, Va.) recorded the eighth nine-inning perfect game in NCAA Division I baseball (since 1957) to lead the top-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 2-0 victory over George Washington Tuesday at Davenport Field.
