BATON ROUGE — LSU right-hander Joey Bourgeois allowed only one hit through seven shutout innings and catcher Micah Gibbs delivered two RBI as No. 1 LSU held off a late Pepperdine rally to beat the Waves, 3-2, Saturday night in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU (10-0) is off to its best start since 1997 when the Tigers started that season with a 19-0 mark. Saturday’s win was the Tigers’ 16th-straight home victory, dating back to last season.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team recorded two big innings in a 14-3 victory over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in front of 2,414 fans at Davenport Field. UVa (7-2) scored six runs in the second inning, then blew the game open with an eight-run fourth inning.

Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) led the Cavaliers’ 16-hit effort with a career-high four hits. Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and Steven Proscia (So., Suffern, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits as well as three RBI. Every UVa starter scored at least one time. UVa’s one through four hitters – Gosselin, Cannon, Dan Grovatt (Jr., Tabernacle, N.J.) and Proscia – combined to go 10-for-16 with nine RBI and seven runs.

Wright State 2 #2 Virginia 1

The Wright State baseball defeated #1 Virginia Friday afternoon by a score of 2-1 in Charlottesville, VA. Senior Alex Kaminsky (Fostoria, OH) picked up the win, going seven innings and giving up one earned run on seven hits. Senior Greg Robinson (Wilmington, OH) came on to pitch the final two innings and earn his first save. Sophomore Tristan Moore (New Albany, OH) led the way offensively with a three-for-four day and a run scored.

ACC Weekend Preview for March 5th-7th

AccBaseballLogo The ACC squads are back in action this weekend with a couple of marquee series taking place in Florida. The Georgia Bulldogs from the SEC head down to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles. This weekend’s series will be the first real test for the Noles as they are sporting a 7-0 record with three game sweeps over Georgia State and Hofstra while winning a midweek game over the Florida Gators in Tampa. The other big series is the Florida Gators heading down to Coral Gables to take on the Miami Hurricanes. The Gators have a 5-1 overall record as they did not play last weekend as LaSalle had travel troubles while Miami has a 6-1 record which includes victories over Manhattan and Rutgers while defeating South Florida in Tampa on Tuesday.

Mitchell, who struck out a school-record 18 batters, is the first Maverick in the history of the program to carry a no-hitter 8.2 innings.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jason Mitchell struck out a school and Southland Conference record 18 batters and held a no-hitter through 8.2 innings, but it took UT Arlington 14 innings to capture its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Missouri State on Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.

2010 NEC Preseason Poll

NECRelease Somerset, NJ – Wagner won a plurality of first-place votes to finish atop the 2010 Northeast Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll.  The league office released the results of the annual survey as a prelude to its 24th season on the diamond.

Flying high following the program’s first ever regular season conference crown last spring, the Seahawks received four top nods to finish one spot in front of defending NEC Tournament champion Monmouth and its two first-place votes.

Wagner set to retire Andrew Bailey’s Number

WagnerBaseball Staten Island, NY - On the heels of 2006 Graduate Andrew Bailey’s Rookie of the Year campaign with the Oakland A’s, Wagner College Athletic Director Walt Hameline and head baseball coach Joe Litterio have announced that the school will retire Bailey’s number. Bailey, who played for the Green & White from 2003-2006, will have his Seahawk number 17 retired at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Quinnipiac on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 pm.

Sacred Heart adds four for 2010-2011 Season

SacredHeart FAIRFIELD, CT – Sacred Heart baseball coach Nick Giaquinto announced the signing of four players to National Letters of Intent (NLI) for the 2011 season. The group includes a pair of switch-hitting catchers and two right handed pitchers.

Two of the players, Dan Perez and Kody Kerski, are both Connecticut natives, while Derick Horn and Robbie Maguire are from New York State.

Quinnipiac signs Three for 2010-2011 Season

QURecruits HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University baseball head coach Dan Gooley has announced National Letter of Intents from Ryan Walsh (Stanford, Conn.), Nicholas Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) and Michael Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.). Walsh and Fabrizio, a pair of right-handed pitchers, and Blumenthal, an outfielder, will join the Bobcats for the 2011 season.

"I am extremely pleased and excited to have three outstanding student-athletes joining our family at Quinnipiac University," Dan Gooley said.
