South Easton, Mass. – The Northeast-10 reigning regular season and tournament champions were selected to finish first again as voted upon by the conference’s 13 coaches.
Franklin Pierce University, picked to finish second nationally in Division II by Baseball America, finished 26-4 in the Northeast-10 last year claiming its second straight regular season championship and second tournament championship in three years. RINDGE, N.H. (February 4, 2008) – Franklin Pierce University is the unanimous top choice in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America’s (NCBWA) Division II Northeast Regional preseason poll. Franklin Pierce, the defending Northeast Region and Northeast-10 regular season and tournament champions, received all nine first place votes by the committee. East Coast Conference regular season and tournament champion Adelphi University was picked second with 73 points. Northeast region and NE-10 Tournament runners-up Bryant University is third, followed by the University of Massachusetts Lowell in fourth and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champions Caldwell College rounds out the top five. The Bryant University Media Relations department has put out a great season preview for the 2008 season. Bryant is entering their final season as members of Division 2 as next season they will start the transition to moving to Division 1. Bryant made the Northeast Regional final in 2007 where they lost to Northeast 10 conference rival Franklin Pierce in an intense Regional Final. (A full CBB article about the game is available here) Bryant returns the Northeast Region top pitcher in Eric Loh. He will have two strong starters with Kevin Cobb and Dan Lozeau. The Bulldogs also have the Bryant career leader and two time conference selection Adam Vuolo returning for his senior season. The problem with the Bulldogs in 2007 was the lack of offense as many of their hitters should considerable weaknesses at the plate. Bryant will bring back sophomore catcher Jeff Vigurs and junior second baseman Dave Muscatello who showed some excellent skills in the field during a our visit. We have found two new schedules from the Northeast 10 conference which is one of only two conferences in the country that uses wooden bats during their regular season. The Northeast 10 conference has been dominated by Franklin Pierce University the last few seasons with UMass-Lowell and Bryant University also picking up some NCAA bids. The schedules are linked below.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats knocked off the Yale Bulldogs over the weekend by a score of 5-2. The Bobcats took advantage of a key Bulldog error in the bottom of the third which gave the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead. The Bobcats would extend the lead to get the 5-2 victory. In the consolation game, Southern Connecticut State knocked off New Haven 8-2. A full recap is available here.
The Northeast-10 Conference Tournament takes place today in Lowell MA at the home of the Lowell Spinners. The teams participating are the Bryant University Bulldogs, UMass-Lowell River Hawks, Franklin Pierce Ravens, and Pace Settlers. Bryant knocked off Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday by a score of 4-2 while Pace University beat Bentley 5-2 in the opening round of the tourney. Franklin Pierce and UMass-Lowell each got byes in the tournament. Franklin Pierce (41-8) enters the weekend as the Number 1 ranked team in the Northeast region by the NCBWA. UMass-Lowell enters as the second seed with a record of 33-16 while Bryant is 29-20 and Pace is 28-24.
The College Baseball Blog will be attending the Northeast-10 Tourney this weekend likely on Sunday. The Blog will be taking the teaching exam on Saturday and might head up after the all-day exam but likely will spend Mother’s Day in Lowell taking in the final games of the Northeast-10 Tourney.
