Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Tuesday.

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the countdown today at number 41 with Cal-State Fullerton junior infielder/LHP Nick Ramirez. The Anaheim California native attended Katella High School where he played under Carlos Ayala and Jimmy Valverde. As a senior, he help lead the Knights to an Empire League championship in 2008 while taking home the league’s most valuable player trophy. He was also named a three-time All-Empire League first teamer (2006-08) and was also named the Knight’s MVP each of those years. Tokyo, Japan – Alfredo Despaigne hit two home runs including a walk-off three-run home run in the 10th inning to give Cuba a 4-3 win over USA in the gold medal game Saturday night at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Meiji Jingu Stadium.

Tokyo, Japan – Team USA scored a combined 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to an 11-0, seven inning quarterfinal win over China Tuesday afternoon at the V FISU World University Championships inside Yokohama Stadium. With the win, USA (15-2) advances to the semi-finals and will play the winner of Chinese Taipei/Japan on Thursday with a scheduled start time yet to be determined.

Tokyo, Japan – In a clash between a pair of unbeaten teams in pool play at the V FISU World University Championships, Matt Barnes (Connecticut) held Canada scoreless through seven innings and helped USA capture the No. 1 seed in Group A Monday night with an 8-1 win at Yokohama Stadium.
Barnes (3-0), who gave up just three hits, did not allow a runner to reach second base and finished with eight punch outs as USA improved its record to 14-2 on the summer. Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) made his fourth appearance working two-third of an inning where he allowed a run on two hits. Cal State Fullerton’s Nick Ramirez entered the game in the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded and struck out Nic Lendvoy to get out of the jam. The left-hander retired all four batters he faced which included a pair of strikeouts.

Tokyo, Japan – Nick Ramirez’ (Cal State Fullerton) single in the 11th inning scored Ryan Wright (Louisville) from second base giving USA a thrilling 8-7 win over Chinese Taipei in pool play Sunday night at Meiji Jingu Stadium.
The game took two tie-break extra-innings to produce a winner, where both squads scored a run in the 10th before USA won the game in the bottom of the 11th. The International Baseball Federation’s (IBAF) tie-break rule, which was implanted in July of 2008, starts in the 10th stanza and each inning needed thereafter, base runners are placed on first and second with no outs.

Tokyo, Japan – Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) struck out a career-best 14 batters setting a new USA FISU single-game record as the Collegiate National Team (CNT) used the 15-run rule after five innings to record its first win at the V FISU World University Championships Friday afternoon over Sri Lanka, 15-0 at Utsumi Shimaoka Ball Park. Taipei, Taiwan – Jackie Bradley, Jr. (South Carolina), Brad Miller (Clemson) and Ryan Wright (Louisville) each collected three hits and helped Team USA to a 9-1 win and a split of the four-game series with Chinese-Taipei Wednesday at Hsinchuang Field.
Bradley, Jr. and Wright joined Alex Dickerson with a team-best two RBI, while Wright smacked his first home run of the summer on a solo shot down the left field line in the third inning.

Taipei, Taiwan – Pete O’Brien (Bethune-Cookman) hit his fourth home run of the season and drove in two runs to help the Collegiate National Team (CNT) snap its two-game skid against Chinese-Taipei Tuesday with a 6-3 victory at Hsinchuang Field. With the win Team USA improves to 10-2 on its summer tour.
O’Brien’s fielder’s choice RBI in the fourth inning broke a one-all and gave USA the lead for good at 2-1. George Springer (Connecticut) singled to right to start the inning and moved over to second when Nick Ramirez (Cal State Fullerton) was hit by a pitch. Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt) advanced the runner’s on a sac bunt towards first before Springer sprinted home on O’Brien’s grounder to short.
