SEC Recap for April 14th

ATHENS, Ga. – Tony Plagman and Jeff Rowland each went 4-for-5 to lead 14 different players with a hit, while the Georgia Tech baseball team (28-7) recorded its largest-ever victory over rival Georgia (11-22) with a 25-6 win Wednesday night at Foley Field. With the win, the Yellow Jackets clinched the three-game series between the two.

The 25 runs also tie the most ever recorded by one team in the 112-year old rivalry. It is the most scored by Tech this season. Tech’s previous largest margin of victory over the Bulldogs came in 1998, a 21-4 win at Russ Chandler Stadium.

"One of our goals tonight was to win the series," head coach Danny Hall said. "I think we played well and really swung the bats well, and it was a nice victory for us."

SouthFloridaPic Freshman Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) delivered a walk-off single down the right-field line in the 10th inning as No. 7 Florida (3-0) completed a sweep of USF (0-3), 7-6, on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium. The Gators had rallied to force extra innings with three runs in the ninth, including the tying run on a two-out fielding error by sophomore shortstop Sam Mende.

KyleHelisekNova No. 7 Florida (2-0) clinched its season-opening weekend series with a 9-1 victory over USF (0-2) on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 3,723 fans at McKethan Stadium. Freshman left-hander Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) tossed 5.2 scoreless innings in his collegiate debut to pick up the win, while sophomore Tyler Thompson (Tequesta, Fla.) (2-for-5) had a career-high four RBI, highlighted by a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning. Freshmen Kamm Washington (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) belted solo homers in the triumph for the Orange and Blue.

SouthFlorida Gainesville, FL- Junior Josh Adams (Jacksonville, Fla.) powered No. 7 Florida to a 6-2 victory over USF in front of 3,309 fans at McKethan Stadium in the season opener for both teams on Friday. The two-time All-SEC second baseman was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, a pair of home runs and a double. In his collegiate debut, freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 2-for-4 and blasted a two-run homer on the first swing of his Gator career. Making his return to the lineup after missing the 2009 campaign, redshirt sophomore right-hander Tommy Toledo (Tampa, Fla.) scattered three hits, registered four strikeouts and allowed an unearned run in 3.1 innings.

Sun Belt Announces 2010 Preseason All-Conference Team and Coaches Poll

BrentzPhoto NEW ORLEANS – Middle Tennessee, the defending Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champion, has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2010 league title in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Blue Raiders received eight of 11 first-place votes from the coaches.

MT is led by junior Bryce Brentz, the reigning SBC Player of the Year and the 2010 SBC Preseason Player of the Year, and Kenneth Roberts, the 2010 SBC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Both Brentz and Roberts were first-team All-SBC selections a season ago as they led the Blue Raiders to a 44-18 and its 14th NCAA appearance.

New Orleans making move down to Division III

Due to financial constraints, UNO has decided to move their athletic program from Division I to Division III. The move was necessary for the Privateers in order to continue participating in NCAA-sanctioned sports. In an act of kindness, the Sun Belt Conference unanimously voted to waive a $500,000 fee for schools that voluntarily leave the conference, helping New Orleans make their transition beginning on July 1, 2010.

UNO adds Biesecker to Coaching Staff

UNOPhoto NEW ORLEANS – Scott Biesecker has been named associate head baseball coach at the University of New Orleans, it was announced on Friday.

It was a familiar hire for UNO head coach Bruce Peddie, who worked with Biesecker for nine years while Peddie was the head coach at Division II Shippensburg.

New Orleans releases 2010 Schedule

JeradComarda NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team will play two schools that reached the College World Series last year, highlighting the 2010 schedule released on Tuesday.

The Privateers will play 12 games against schools that reached NCAA postseason play last season, including three games against CWS participants LSU and Southern Mississippi.
