CBD Top 100 Countdown: 80. Alex Real (New Mexico)

AlexRealNewMexicoWe continue our countdown today at number 80 with New Mexico catcher/first baseman Alex Real. In his sophomore season with the Lobo’s, Real stepped up his game appearing in 55 games hitting .317 with 18 doubles, 8 home runs and 36 RBI. The 6’1, 200 pounder from Anthem, Arizona showed great pop during the 2013 season and was named All-Mountain West second team. Real’s versatility on the field made head coach Ray Birmingham’s job easy as the Lobos went 21-4 with him starting at DH and 26-6 with him batting fifth in the order. Additionally he made eight starts at catcher and 22 at first base. Continue reading

Fourth-seeded Columbia rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to erase a 5-0 deficit and send the game into extra innings where the Lions defeated New Mexico 6-5 on a Nick Crucet RBI single in the 13th inning. Continue reading

FULLERTON, CA – On Friday at Goodwin Field the No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils and the New Mexico Lobos kicked off the Fullerton Regional as ASU defeated the Mountain West champions in a 4-3 finish.

Mitch Garver of New Mexico put the Lobos on the board in the first with an RBI single to drive in Chase Harris who led off the inning with a single to left field. Continue reading

2013 Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll

MountainWestConference_thumb.jpgCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Defending Mountain West champion New Mexico has been predicted to win its second consecutive regular season MW baseball title in 2013, according to a vote of the six MW head coaches. The Lobos received five first-place votes and 35 points overall. San Diego State received the remaining first-place vote and 26 points to edge out MW newcomers Nevada (23 points) and Fresno State (22 points) for second place. UNLV was picked fifth (13 points), followed by Air Force in sixth (7 points). Continue reading

New Mexico releases 2013 Schedule

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – If the University of New Mexico baseball team is going to return to the NCAA postseason for a fourth consecutive year in 2013, it will have to traverse yet another difficult schedule. Head coach Ray Birmingham released the team’s schedule for the 2013 season, and, like always, there are many tough, quality opponents, including 11 games against teams that made an NCAA regional in 2012.
