Murray State’s Rob McDonald not returning

Murray State Director of Athletics Allen Ward announced today that Rob McDonald will not return for his 12th season as Head Coach of the Murray State baseball team.

“This was a very difficult decision as I think the world of Rob and his family,” said Ward. “He’s a class act and I appreciate his service and dedication to the University”.

OhioValleyConferenceBRENTWOOD, Tenn. — After winning the Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship a season ago and returning six positional starters this year Tennessee Tech has been tabbed the 2014 preseason favorite for the 11-team league in a vote of OVC head baseball coaches and sports information directors. In additional voting TTU senior first baseman Zach Stephens was named OVC Preseason Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season while Jacksonville State closer Travis Stout was tabbed OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. In additional voting APSU junior second baseman Jordan Hankins and Tennessee Tech junior first baseman Zach Stephens were named OVC Preseason Co-Players of the Year while Belmont senior lefty Chase Brookshire was tabbed OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Ohio Valley Conference to play Fridays-Sundays in 2012

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference has announced a change to the format of its Conference regular season series for baseball starting with the 2012 season.

Currently the OVC plays a three-game series spread over two days, with the teams playing a doubleheader on Saturday (with one of those games being a 7-inning game, the other a 9-inning affair) and a single 9-inning game on Sunday. Continue reading

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – A season after claiming the 2010 OVC Tournament Championship, Jacksonville State has been tabbed the 2011 preseason favorite for the nine-team league in a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches. In additional voting Tennessee Tech senior All-American outfielder Chad Oberacker was named OVC Preseason Player of the Year while Eastern Illinois junior hurler Mike Hoekstra was tabbed OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Murray State freshman Thomas McGurk passes away

ThomasMcGurkMurrayStateThe Murray State athletic department endured a tragic loss Saturday evening when freshman baseball player Thomas McGurk was killed in a car accident in Murray.

“We are saddened by this tragedy and the loss of one of our student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics Allen Ward.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”

Freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead No. 4 Florida (38-12) to a 9-3 victory over UNF (29-23) on Tuesday night in front of 3,314 fans at McKethan Stadium. In addition, the rookie belted his team-leading 17th homer, a two-run shot in the fifth, to establish a Gator freshman single-season record. UF extended its winning streak to five games and has captured 12 of its last 13 outings.  

“We got a really good start from Tommy Toledo and North Florida has always played us tough,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan. “They’re scrappy and they’re well coached by Dusty Rhodes. It was good to get on the board early and get a 5-0 lead. I thought it gave us a little cushion and it was great to get a lot of players in there tonight. Overall, it was a great team effort and a positive way to end the regular season here at home.”

#14 Arkansas at #15 Oklahoma

The Arkansas Razorbacks make the trek to Norman Oklahoma tonight to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Arkansas enters the game with a 38-14 overall record but are on a three game losing streak thanks to the South Carolina Gamecocks who swept them in Fayetteville over the weekend. Arkansas will send freshman LHP Randall Fant to the hill as he has a 3-1 record with a 4.05 ERA in 33.1 innings. The Sooners enter the game with a 37-14 record after taking the last two games of a three game weekend series with Memphis. The Sooners will send junior RHP Michael Rocha to the mound as he is 6-1 with a 3.70 ERA in 15 appearances including two starts.
