SoCal College Baseball Opening Weekend Preview

It’s Valentine’s Day!

Who cares? Unless your sweetie is taking you to the ballfield, we definitely don’t.

That’s because it’s Opening Day! The college baseball season officially kicks off today.

To get you ready for the opening weekend of Southern California baseball action, we’ve got where the teams will be playing along with an Around the Horn preview of series to watch.

And in this opening weekend preview, you’ll also get the preseason version of Shotgun’s SoCal Squad, your All-Southern California Team.

Teams wil be trying to start strong to open the season and there is an opportunity for teams to makes some noise. Long Beach State hosts Vanderbilt while No. 1 ranked Cal State Fullerton will welcome a Washington State squad that has a lot of potential.

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 20. Erick Fedde (UNLV)

D68984_48College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 20 on our countdown is UNLV junior RHP Erick Fedde from Las Vegas, Nevada where he attended Las Vegas High School. He was a three-year letter winner mainly as a pitcher, but also played in the outfield for the Wildcats. He had a career 14-8 overall record on the hill while being named second team all-state as a junior while being first team all-region honors as an outfielder and first team all-state honors as a pitcher as a senior. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 24th round of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft but decided to head to UNLV. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 23 Michael Cederoth (San Diego State)

CederothSDSUSmallCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 23 on our countdown is San Diego State junior RHP Michael Cederoth from Steele Canyon, High School. The San Diego native was a two year letter winner going 4-4 with one save and a 2.33 earned run average while tossing five complete games. He struck out 104 batters over 72 innings. He was named First team all-East County selection and to all-Grossmont Hills League second team. He was selected in the 42nd round of the 2011 Major League draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks but decided to head to San Diego State. Continue reading

USA Baseball announces 2014 Collegiate Team Coaching Staff

The manager, Dave Van Horn of the University of Arkansas, was announced in April of 2013. Joining Van Horn on the coaching staff will be Rob Childress (Texas A&M Univ.), Ray Birmingham (Univ. of New Mexico) and Steve Rodriguez (Pepperdine Univ.). Continue reading

GarrettMundellFresnoStateWe continue the countdown today with number 77, Fresno State pitcher Garrett Mundell. In his sophomore season with the Bulldogs, Mundell made 26 appearances finishing the season 1-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched. His 48 strikeouts were good for 3rd on the staff and he was named to the 2013 Academic All-Mountain West team. Mundell earned his only win of the season against a talented Air Force squad. CBD Top 100 Countdown: 80. Alex Real (New Mexico)

AlexRealNewMexicoWe continue our countdown today at number 80 with New Mexico catcher/first baseman Alex Real. In his sophomore season with the Lobo’s, Real stepped up his game appearing in 55 games hitting .317 with 18 doubles, 8 home runs and 36 RBI. The 6’1, 200 pounder from Anthem, Arizona showed great pop during the 2013 season and was named All-Mountain West second team. Real’s versatility on the field made head coach Ray Birmingham’s job easy as the Lobos went 21-4 with him starting at DH and 26-6 with him batting fifth in the order. Air Force releases 2014 Schedule

MikeKazlauskyAirForce.jpgUSAF ACADEMY, Colo.- Air Force baseball released its 2014 schedule, announced today by head coach Mike Kazlausky. The 54-game slate features 18 home games. The Falcons will play in nine different states and against four teams that played in the 2013 NCAA Baseball Tournament Regionals.

Air Force is slated to play one of its toughest schedules ever, with the team playing opponents from the Pac 12, Big 10 and Big 12 conferences. The Falcons will play games against Regional qualifiers South Dakota State, New Mexico and San Diego State and Super Regional qualifier Kansas State. Continue reading

Army, Navy, and Air Force Baseball Forced to Shutdown

ArmyBaseball The Army, Navy, and Air Force baseball programs have been forced to stop fall competitions with the federal government shutting down all intercollegiate activities at the service academies. This weekend’s football games between Navy and Air Force and the Army at Boston College are both unlikely to happen unless the government shutdown is resolved in the very near future.
