CBD Top 100 Countdown: 80. Alex Real (New Mexico)

AlexRealNewMexicoWe continue our countdown today at number 80 with New Mexico catcher/first baseman Alex Real. In his sophomore season with the Lobo’s, Real stepped up his game appearing in 55 games hitting .317 with 18 doubles, 8 home runs and 36 RBI. The 6’1, 200 pounder from Anthem, Arizona showed great pop during the 2013 season and was named All-Mountain West second team. Real’s versatility on the field made head coach Ray Birmingham’s job easy as the Lobos went 21-4 with him starting at DH and 26-6 with him batting fifth in the order. Air Force releases 2014 Schedule

MikeKazlauskyAirForce.jpgUSAF ACADEMY, Colo.- Air Force baseball released its 2014 schedule, announced today by head coach Mike Kazlausky. The 54-game slate features 18 home games. The Falcons will play in nine different states and against four teams that played in the 2013 NCAA Baseball Tournament Regionals.

Air Force is slated to play one of its toughest schedules ever, with the team playing opponents from the Pac 12, Big 10 and Big 12 conferences. The Falcons will play games against Regional qualifiers South Dakota State, New Mexico and San Diego State and Super Regional qualifier Kansas State. Continue reading

Army, Navy, and Air Force Baseball Forced to Shutdown

ArmyBaseball The Army, Navy, and Air Force baseball programs have been forced to stop fall competitions with the federal government shutting down all intercollegiate activities at the service academies. This weekend’s football games between Navy and Air Force and the Army at Boston College are both unlikely to happen unless the government shutdown is resolved in the very near future.

UNLV releases 2014 Schedule

Chamber’s fourth season at the school will be highlighted by facing nationally perennial teams from conferences such as the SEC, Big 12, Pac-12, ACC and Big West. The Rebels will make their first road trip to the Eastern Time Zone since 2000 and will host the annual Mountain West tournament for the sixth time. Continue reading

Saint Mary’s set to name Eric Valenzuela as Head Coach

EricValenzuelaMORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s director of athletics Mark Orr announced Wednesday that San Diego State pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Eric Valenzuela has been named as the 12th head coach of the Gaels baseball program.

“Eric brings a tremendous track record and level of experience that we feel is the perfect foundation to lead our baseball program to the heights we believe it is capable of,” Orr said. “We expect our baseball program to compete and win both on the field and in the classroom and Eric’s teams have been consistent high achievers in both of those areas. LOS ANGELES — Dylan Covey put together his best start of the season to lead San Diego past rival San Diego State, 6-3, in an elimination game in the Los Angeles Regional Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

San Diego fell behind 2-0, but rallied for five runs in the fifth inning with redshirt senior Austin Green striking the big blow. After San Diego State starter Michael Cederoth walked in a run, Philip Walby entered to pitch. Green greeted him with a two-run liner through the left side. Continue reading

San Diego State opened the season by ruining San Diego’s grand opening of its brand new $13.8 million stadium, Fowler Park. The Aztecs wanted to finish the season in the same fashion when the two teams met Saturday afternoon in an elimination game of the Los Angeles Regional.

Instead, it was the Toreros that got the satisfaction of putting out their city rival. Dylan Covey produced his strongest outing of the season to lead San Diego to a 6-3 win at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Continue reading
