SAUGET, ILL., May 20, 2008 – The field is set and beginning on Saturday, eight teams from across the country embark on their quest for an NCAA Division II baseball national championship.
SIU Edwardsville and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, along with the village of Sauget and the Gateway Grizzlies, will co-host this year’s World Series at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois, home of the Frontier League’s Grizzlies. ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist baseball team will begin its quest for an NCAA Division II College World Series title starting 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 25 against Mount Olive in the opening round of the tournament at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
The Tigers (47-14) have won four straight after falling in the Gulf South Conference Tournament to Southern Arkansas. Ouachita Baptist reached the collegiate World Series for the first time in school history by using dominate pitching and solid hitting throughout the NCAA Division II South Central Regional last week in Cleveland, Miss. Mount Olive remained at No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 for the fourth consecutive week and ninth time in the last 10 weeks. The Bryant Bulldogs knocked off Number 1 ranked Mount Olive Trojans 5-4 on Thursday which was the first loss of the season for the Mount Olive snapping a 23 game winning streak. The Bulldogs were down 4-0 after three innings but were able to come back behind a strong pitching performance from freshmen pitchers Michael Ryan and David O’Brien. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the fifth innings to get back in the game behind hits from Mark Dondero, Dave Muscatello, and Jason Alexander. Bryant would score a run in the sixth inning to tie the game before taking the lead for good in the seventh inning when Pat O’Connor hit a double to drive in Jeff Vigurs with the winning run.
The Division 2 poll by The College Baseball News that came out on Feb. 25th is led by Mount Olive who has taken over the top spot in the poll with a 16-1 record. Ouachita Baptist is ranked second in the country with an solid record of 12-1. Two-time defending national champion and former number 1 team in the country Tampa is ranked number 3.
