Former Morehead State star Taylor Davis succeeding in Minor Leagues

He is too short. He has a bad body. Like a scene out of “Moneyball,” former Morehead State catcher Taylor Davis understood the real and invented roadblocks that stood between him and his dream of playing professional baseball.
Standing 5-foot-10 and tilting the scale at just 200 pounds, Davis did not look the part of a prototypical catcher. A native of Jupiter, Fla., he fought the stereotypes and labels associated with being a catcher with a “bad body” from a young age. Read the rest of this entry »
Ohio Valley Conference to play Fridays-Sundays in 2012

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference has announced a change to the format of its Conference regular season series for baseball starting with the 2012 season.
Currently the OVC plays a three-game series spread over two days, with the teams playing a doubleheader on Saturday (with one of those games being a 7-inning game, the other a 9-inning affair) and a single 9-inning game on Sunday. Read the rest of this entry »

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – A season after claiming the 2010 OVC Tournament Championship, Jacksonville State has been tabbed the 2011 preseason favorite for the nine-team league in a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches. In additional voting Tennessee Tech senior All-American outfielder Chad Oberacker was named OVC Preseason Player of the Year while Eastern Illinois junior hurler Mike Hoekstra was tabbed OVC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Cal Ripken League All-Stars tie Juncos 4-4 in Puerto Rico

At Estadio Jose Pepito Bonano in Guaynabo, the Ripken League Stars played to a 4-4 tie after ten innings with the Juncos, a team of college, junior college, and Puerto Rican Double-A ballplayers, when the Juncos ran out of pitchers for the game.
Down 1-0, Alex Frederick (University of North Carolina-Greensboro/Baltimore Redbirds) doubled home Stuart MacInnes (University of Texas-Pan American/Rockville Express), who tripled with two outs in the second inning, to tie the game.

LSU 10 Nicholls State 3
BATON ROUGE, La. – A three-run homer by designated hitter Matt Gaudet, along with six shutout innings by the Tigers’ pitching staff lifted No. 3 LSU to a 10-3 victory over Nicholls State Wednesday night in Alex Box Stadium.
The Tigers (14-2) will open conference play Friday when they host SEC rival Arkansas in a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium. Friday’s game will be LSU’s first televised game of the season and will air on Cox Sports Television (Cox cable channel 37 in Baton Rouge). LSU defeated Arkansas four times last season, including twice in the College World Series.

A seven-run first inning powered No. 3 Florida State (7-0) to a 10-5 victory over No. 5 Florida (5-1) on Tuesday night at the inaugural Florida Four Tourney held at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. It was the first of four regular-season meetings between the Sunshine State rivals, all in different cities.
The Seminoles exploded out of the gates with seven runs on six hits and two hit batters in the first inning, chasing sophomore starter Anthony DeSclafani (Freehold, N.J.) (0-1). Junior Tyler Holt (2-for-5) opened with a single up the middle, moved to third on a base-hit into right field by sophomore James Ramsey and senior Stephen Cardullo (2-for-3) was plunked to fill the sacks with none out. DeSclafani (3 H, 5 R) then hit junior Mike McGee to bring across Holt and surrendered a two-run single to junior Stuart Tapley (2-for-4) before being replaced by freshman Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.). Sophomore Sherman Johnson re-loaded the bases with a flare into center field and Randall had freshman Justin Gonzalez ground into a 3-6-1 double play, scoring McGee with the fourth run. Redshirt junior Rafael Lopez stroked an RBI double into right center and freshman Jayce Boyd (2-for-4) followed with a two-run homer to left field for his first collegiate homer and a seven-run cushion.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Fresh off the 2009 OVC Regular Season Championship, Eastern Illinois has been picked as the 2010 preseason favorite for the nine-team league in a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches. In additional voting, Morehead State senior shortstop Drew Lee and Eastern Kentucky junior third baseman Jayson Langfels were named OVC Preseason Co-Players of the Year while Murray State senior Chris Craycraft and Eastern Illinois junior Josh Mueller were tabbed OVC Preseason Co-Pitchers of the Year.

Nommensen earned his second OVC Player of the Week honor of the season after hitting .769 (10-of-13) with seven runs scored, two dobules, three home runs and nine RBI in four Eastern Illinois wins last week. He reached base safely in 14 of his 17 plate appearances during the week, including in each of his first 13 at-bats of the week.
