2011 Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll

ST. LOUIS – Illinois State, which returns a dominating young pitching staff and solid depth from last year’s State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving four of eight first-place votes.

NCBWA releases 2011 Preseason All-Americans

IRVINE, Calif. – Loaded with several standouts from the 2010 NCAA World Series, the 11th annual Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America team is one of the most impressive groups in the two decades of selections.

Returning Dick Howser Trophy winner 3B Anthony Rendon of Rice leads a team of collegiate standouts along with World Series returnees from the last stand at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb: champion South Carolina’s CWS Most Outstanding Player OF Jackie Bradley, Jr., and relief ace Matt Price, pitchers Matt Purke, Steven Maxwell, Kyle Winkler and OF Jason Coats of TCU, Florida State’s all-purpose utility standout Mike McGee, SP Gerrit Cole of UCLA, Florida’s Austin Maddox and Preston Tucker, Clemson OF Jeff Schaus, and Oklahoma 3B Garrett Buechele. SIU names Ken Henderson as Interim Head Coach

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois associate head baseball coach Ken Henderson was named the interim head coach for the 2011 season, Director of Athletics Mario Moccia announced Tuesday.

Henderson, 50, succeeds his longtime friend Dan Callahan, who passed away on Nov. 15. For Henderson, the 2011 season marks his 21st year working with the Saluki baseball program. Continue reading SIU names Ken Henderson as Interim Head Coach

Wichita State releases 2011 Schedule

WICHITA, Kan. – The 2011 Wichita State baseball schedule features 17 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams along with 32 home games, head coach Gene Stephenson announced Nov. 30.

“Once again, we have a very tough schedule,” Stephenson said. “We play a lot of games away from Eck Stadium early on and then Valley play will be difficult because a lot of teams return a lot of players. This schedule will give us a great measuring stick on how good we are. It will be an entertaining home schedule for the fans with games against Midwest opponents Kansas State, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts and Creighton.” Continue reading Wichita State releases 2011 Schedule

SIU Baseball Coach Dan Callahan Passes Away

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University head baseball coach Dan Callahan died Monday at his home in Carterville, Ill.

Callahan, 52, lost a courageous battle with neurotropic melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer. He is survived by his wife, Stacy, daughters, Alexa (19) and Carly (14), and parents Ann and Gene. Continue reading SIU Baseball Coach Dan Callahan Passes Away

Wichita State’s Mitch Caster Passes Away


MitchCasterWichitaState WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State baseball student-athlete Mitch Caster was killed in a car accident early Monday morning in Iowa.  He was driving home to Wichita from playing summer baseball in Rochester, Minn.

"We are all deeply saddened over the tragic loss of Mitch Caster," said head coach Gene Stephenson.  "Our entire team is devastated.  Mitch was a fine young man and great teammate.  The memories that every team member and coach has of him will always be cherished.  May God bless and keep him.  Our hearts go out to the entire Caster family in this time of grief."

LSU in need of Pitching for 2011

LSUSECChampionshipPhoto The LSU pitching staff has been hammered with injuries, transfers, and players signing with MLB teams. The Tigers have lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery this summer with Jordan Rittiner and Joey Bourgeois will miss next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this summer. There is an outside chance Left-hander Chris Garrett will be back in April according to a Paul Mainieri in a report from The Times-Picayune. (Link) Both LHP Chris Matulis and RHP Mitch Moorman have decided to transfer. Matulis will join former LSU assistant Terry Rooney at Central Florida while Mitch Moorman will head to Wichita State to play under legendary head coach Gene Stephenson.
