Columbia, S.C. – Freshman right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson struck out eight batters in a career-high seven innings and Reese Havens hit his seventh home run of the year as South Carolina defeated College of Charleston 5-3 on Wednesday evening at Sarge Frye Field. The Gamecocks improve to 16-6 on the year while the loss drops College of Charleston to 16-8. Carolina returns to action at home this weekend with a three-game series at Sarge Frye Field vs. Kentucky. Continue reading

Junior Frank Pesanello hit what was the eventual game-winning, pinch-hit, three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to guide the Northeastern University baseball team to an 8-6 victory over the Rhode Island Rams at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, Rhode Island on Tuesday evening.

Pesanello’s homer was his sixth of the season, putting him second on the team behind captain Mike Lyon, who has eight on the season. Lyon, who has been anchoring the Husky attack all season, led the team with three hits, including two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Continue reading

USD, Gonzaga, and Northern Iowa win on Monday

HILO, HI – The 19th-raked University of San Diego baseball team (13-7) completed a four-game sweep over the University of Hawaii – Hilo (7-11) with a 9-4 win in five innings Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium.

There was a 40 minute rain delay, followed by a 30 minute lightning delay, then followed by another 20 minute rain delay that caused the game to start late, and because of travel plans for the Torero baseball team to get to Honolulu, the game had to be called after five innings, but does go down as a completed game. Shockers complete sweep of TCU

WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (11-3) took all three games against TCU (9-8), wrapping up with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon.

Wichita State scored in the first inning for the ninth time in 14 games. Ryan Jones singled up the middle and Conor Gillaspie brought him around with a double to left field.

The Shockers added a run in both the second and third innings. Kenny Williams, Jr., walked and stole second, allowing him to cross home on a bouncer into center field by Andy Dirks. Josh Workman doubled just fair down the right field line and scored easily on a single by Bret Bascue that bounced past the third baseman. Continue reading

Indiana State knocks of Charleston 6-3

Brian Jett collected three hits and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning leading Indiana State to a 6-3 win over College of Charleston in college baseball action before 471 at Patriots Point Stadium on Sunday.

Charleston, which stands at 13-6, plays host to nationally ranked South Carolina at 7:00 on Tuesday. The Sycamores, who earned a split of the four-game series with Charleston, improved to 4-10. Continue reading

DALLAS, Texas – Northern Illinois and Dallas Baptists combined for 19 runs and 23 hits Thursday night before the home team prevailed 11-8 at Patriot Field. The Huskies (3-9) held a 7-5 advantage before the Patriots (10-4), who received votes in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, mounted a comeback keyed by a five-run seventh inning. Gonzaga and SIU cruise to victories

Spokane, Wash.- Junior first baseman Ryan Wiegand homered for the third straight game and Gonzaga University won its fourth straight and its seventh in the last eight outings with a 7-4 win over Indiana University Monday in the opener of the Pepsi/Johnny Quick baseball tournament at Beiden Field.

With the scored tied 4-4 in the eighth, Wiegand hit a two-out 0-1 pitch to left-center to put the Bulldogs (7-5) up 6-4. Evan Wells had opened the inning with a walk off Anthony Agnew, on in relief of Hoosiers (3-6) starter Tyler Tufts. Chris Squires relieved Agnew and the Bulldogs got a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to third to set the stage for Wiegand, who tied Jason Chatwood for the team home run lead. Continue reading

Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. Western Michigan entered the game having scored at least 15 runs in three of its last five games, but McDonald kept the Bronco bats silent all afternoon. Continue reading
