Missouri Valley Conference Recap and Season Awards

MVC.jpgWith a swinging strikeout of Southern Illinois’ outfielder Nick Johnson, Illinois State closer Jeremy Rhoades capped off an unlikely comeback and secured what, just a few months earlier, seemed like an improbable regular season title for his school. For the first time Illinois State’s history, they are regular season Missouri Valley Conference champions. However, just a few months prior, this season seemed like a “rebuilding year” for the team from Normal, IL. Before April 3rd, the Redbirds were just 12-14 overall and came off an embarrassing 20-2 loss to in-state rival Eastern Illinois. However, after April 3rd, the Redbirds embarked on what will be remembered as perhaps the greatest in-season turn-around in school history: the Redbirds went 24-4 through the end of the season, including a school-record 12-game winning streak. The Redbirds compiled a league-best 2.76 ERA in conference games, tallying 12 complete games (which was three more than the rest of the conference combined) including 10 shutouts (the previous Illinois State record was 4). Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (May 10th-12th)

MVCFeaturedWichita State found themselves one win away from clinching their first regular season MVC title since 2010 with, but poor fielding and lack of hitting came back to haunt the Shockers who lost two of three to Creighton this weekend at Eck Stadium. As a result, the Shockers (who are now done with conference play) go into the last weekend of the season with a final conference record of 15-6. Thanks to the Shockers’ two losses this weekend, the Illinois State Redbirds leapfrogged into first place with a series win against visiting Evansville. The Redbirds dropped their opener in a pitchers’ duel 3-2, but came back to outscore the Aces 31-7 in the last two games—run-ruling UE twice to take the series. The Shockers loss is now the Redbirds opportunity as the door is open for Illinois State to take the regular season title, and an all-important number one seed in the tournament, if they can take all three in their final series against Southern Illinois. The Salukis will be looking to make sure that does not happen and with their sweep this weekend against last place Bradley have given themselves a chance at a 6th place finish if they can string together at least two more wins this season. Elsewhere in the conference, Missouri State played a non-conference series against Wright State and Indiana State swept visiting Alcorn State. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 29th)

MVCFeaturedWe have reached the mid-way point in the Missouri Valley conference series schedule, with some unexpected results this season. With their second straight conference sweep, the Illinois State Redbirds—who were picked to finish fourth in the pre-season standings—have surprised many throughout the Valley by shooting to the top of the standings after compiling a 9-3 record. To no one’s surprise, right behind them sit Missouri State and Wichita State tied for second. The Bears were able to pick up another series victory by outlasting a scrappy Evansville team, while the Shockers slugged their way past Southern Illinois to add two more wins to their record. Fourth place Creighton played their out of conference weekend against the trio of Nebraska, Rutgers and #24 Oklahoma State in Omaha. Indiana State’s weekend series against UT Martin was canceled due to rain. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 19th-21st)

MVCFeaturedAnother weekend of conference play is in the books and Missouri State has pulled back into a tie atop the conference after a sweep of Bradley at home. They of course share the lead with Wichita State who were able to steal two from Evansville at the Eck. The Aces continue to be on the losing end of close games as their last four losses have each come by just one run. Illinois State pitchers were masterful in their series sweep against Indiana State, allowing just one earned run in twenty-four innings of work. Meanwhile, Creighton moved into third place in the standings thanks to a sweep of Southern Illinois in Omaha. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Valley Conference Recap April 5th-7th

MVC_thumb.jpgAn exciting weekend of Missouri Valley conference play is in the books as each series saw it’s teams square off in closely contested match-ups. Perhaps the most exciting was Missouri State and Illinois State’s Friday night opener, in which starters Nick Petree and Chris Razo exchanged strike-outs down the stretch before Petree was ultimately handed his first loss of the season. Perhaps the most controversial was Creighton’s opening game win over Bradley which saw a critical play at the plate, and a not completely unexpected ejection thereafter. Southern Illinois and Evansville saw their own pitchers’ duel on Friday night as starters Kyle Freeland and Cody Forsythe both went nine innings in a finish that would need extras to decide it. Meanwhile, Indiana State rescued a sweep at the hands of Wichita State after Sean Manaea, who was scratched from his Friday start, was able to pick up the win on Sunday. Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (March 22nd-24th)

MVCFeaturedThe start of Missouri Valley Conference play was marked as it always seems to be: with a winter snow storm. All the teams in the Valley rushed to finish their series before Sunday (with the notable exception of Wichita State who had the fortune of playing in Hawaii—and ironically had Sunday’s game rained out). In the first weekend of conference play, Creighton took two of three on the road at Evansville, while Indiana State proved they will be a tough team to beat this season by taking all three from visiting Southern Illinois. Out of conference, Illinois State dropped their series to Eastern Illinois, Bradley lost their two games against Dartmouth in Florida, and although their basketball team is on a tear this March, the Wichita State baseball team struggled through their road series at Hawaii, picking up just one win in their four game series. Missouri State had the weekend off. Read the rest of this entry »

Creighton Takes Series over Pacific

Creighton (10-4) took two of three from visiting Pacific (6-12) in Omaha this weekend. In Friday’s 7-2 win, freshman starter Tommy Strunc shut down the Tigers going seven and a third, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out eight. Second baseman Jake Peter had the start of a tremendous weekend, going four for five and knocking in three runs. Pacific rebounded in the second game however, besting the Jays 5-2. Despite another four for five day from Peter, the Jays left twelve on base and struggled to get the timely hit against the duo of Cory Popham and Kyle Crawford. In the rubber match, five CU pitchers held the Tigers to just one earned run as the Jays were able to take the series with a 5-2 win.  Read the rest of this entry »

CBD Photo Gallery: Dirtbags Snap 6-Game Skid, Beat Shockers 4-1

Tanner Deaman can't make the play.LONG BEACH, Calif. —  Jeff McNeil woke up the comatose Long Beach State offense with a four-hit performance, including driving in the tying and winning runs. The Dirtbags (7-11) snapped a six-game losing streak, beating Wichita State 4-1 Friday night at Blair Field.

During the losing streak, Long Beach had averaged less than five hits per game and had scored only eight runs in six games. On Friday, the Dirtbags were able to get runners on, but couldn’t get the big hit early, stranding seven runners in the first three innings.

McNeil singled up the middle to score Jonathan Serven in the sixth inning tying the game 1-1 and then provided the go-ahead RBI two innings later when he rolled one through the right side allowing Zack Rivera to score. Michael Hill followed McNeil with a two-run triple down the right field line to give the Dirtbags a pair of insurance runs.

Those insurance runs provided a measure of comfort even when Wichita State was able to load the bases with one out in the ninth inning. Newly appointed closer Jon Maciel got out of the jam with a strikeout and a slow roller to second base to end the game and pick up his second save.

Long Beach starting pitcher Shane Carle had his best outing of the season. He threw seven innings, allowing only three hits and an unearned run while striking out seven, but he did not factor into the decision.  Josh Frye (1-1) picked up the win after a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Wichita State reliever Albert Minnis (1-1) took the loss.

Check out the 21-shot photo gallery from Friday night’s tight ball game:
