Is College Baseball in Minnesota on Life Support?
The Minnesota Vikings are currently in negotiations to build a new stadium to replace the aging Metrodome. Minnesota releases 2013 Schedule

The 2013 University of Minnesota baseball season marks a new beginning in Golden Gopher history. As Gopher baseball enters its 125th year as a University of Minnesota sport, it also is the first year of the newly constructed Siebert Field. With a combination of games at the Metrodome, Siebert Field and hosting the Big Ten Tournament at Target Field, the Gophers will kick off the season on Feb. 2 with the 19th annual Pro and Legends Alumni game. Minnesota announces Temporary Staff Changes

This past June, University of Minnesota baseball pitching coach Todd Oakes was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. As Coach Oakes continues his fight against cancer, the Gopher baseball program has made temporary staff changes. Head coach John Anderson has announced that Director of Operations Lee Swenson will become an assistant coach with the team. Anderson has also announced that Todd’s son and former Gopher, Tyler Oakes, will be the volunteer assistant and pitching coach. The program will assess the coaching responsibilities based on Todd’s health in January, and will rejoin the Golden Gopher program at the appropriate time. Read the rest of this entry »

Minnesota holds Groundbreaking Event for Renovations

A historic day for Golden Gopher baseball as the University of Minnesota Athletics department held a groundbreaking ceremony, today, June 11th, 2012, at Siebert Field. Approved by the University’s Board of Regents on Friday, Gopher baseball held a groundbreaking event in front of fans, donors and media members.
President Eric Kaler opened the ceremony, followed by Director of Athletics Joel Maturi. “I thank former players and the baseball community for being patient,” Maturi said. “It has not been easy. But it is now the beginning of a new era. Over these 20 years there has remained one constant, John Anderson. Big Ten Announces Sites for Future Baseball Tournaments

Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced on Friday the sites for its 2013 and 2014 baseball tournaments. The 2013 Big Ten Baseball Tournament will be held at Target Field in Minneapolis, the home of Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins, marking the first time that the event will be held at a Major League Baseball facility. The 2014 tournament will be held at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb., the site of the NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series.
The Big Ten Baseball Tournament has been played as a neutral-site event in Columbus, Ohio, since 2009. The event was held at Huntington Park, the home of the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, in 2009 and 2011 and will be played at that ballpark May 23-26, 2012. The tournament was held at Ohio State’s Bill Davis Stadium in 2010. Prior to 2009, the Big Ten Baseball Tournament was played at the site of the regular-season champion or the champion from a pre-selected division, with the exception of 1993 and 1994, when it was held in Battle Creek, Mich.

2012 Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – After winning a share of the Big Ten title for the first time since 1979, Michigan State has been selected by the conference coaches as the favorite to win in 2012, the Big Ten office announced on Tuesday. The conference’s baseball coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three players from their own squads to a Players to Watch list. Following the Spartans on the coaches’ preseason top six list are No. 2 Purdue, No. 3 Minnesota, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Illinois. Read the rest of this entry »
