The University of Minnesota baseball team has announced its 2015 schedule. The Golden Gophers are slated to play 53 games this upcoming spring, including 21 at Siebert Field. With the Metrodome being torn down to make way for a new stadium, Minnesota will have a full slate of non-conference games on the road or at neutral sites before opening its home season at Siebert Field in late March. The Gophers start 2014 by hosting a series against Northern Illinois in Glendale, Ariz., Feb. 14-16. They will also be the home team against Creighton in Fort Myers, Fla., Feb. 21-23. The Minnesota Vikings are currently in negotiations to build a new stadium to replace the aging Metrodome. Currently, during the winter months the Metrodome serves as the home of the University of Minnesota baseball program and many other smaller college and high schools. The 2013 University of Minnesota baseball season marks a new beginning in Golden Gopher history. As Gopher baseball enters its 125th year as a University of Minnesota sport, it also is the first year of the newly constructed Siebert Field. With a combination of games at the Metrodome, Siebert Field and hosting the Big Ten Tournament at Target Field, the Gophers will kick off the season on Feb. 2 with the 19th annual Pro and Legends Alumni game. This past June, University of Minnesota baseball pitching coach Todd Oakes was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. As Coach Oakes continues his fight against cancer, the Gopher baseball program has made temporary staff changes. Head coach John Anderson has announced that Director of Operations Lee Swenson will become an assistant coach with the team. Anderson has also announced that Todd’s son and former Gopher, Tyler Oakes, will be the volunteer assistant and pitching coach. The program will assess the coaching responsibilities based on Todd’s health in January, and will rejoin the Golden Gopher program at the appropriate time.
