CBD Column: Should MLB Draft move up Signing Day?

Last week we saw the yearly flurry of draft picked being signed by MLB clubs right at the deadline.

This year, 22 out of the 33 first round picks had not signed heading into the final hour before the deadline. Is this really fair to college baseball coaches to have some of their prized recruits for the next season leave them at the last hour?

Should the deadline be moved to an earlier date for example July 1st or 15th? Continue reading

CBD talks with Mike Gambino (Boston College)

College Baseball Daily caught up with Boston College head coach Mike Gambino on March 27th after the Eagles 9-1 defeat at the hands of the Virginia Tech Hokies. The weekend was a success though for the Eagles as they won the first two games against the Hokies while losing the last game of the series. After the loss, the Eagles are now 10-11 on the year while being 4-5 in ACC play which is good enough for a second place tie with Clemson. Competition and New Traditions to Fuel 2011 Eagles Under Gambino

A new era begins this year in Chestnut Hill with Mike Gambino taking over the Boston College program after Mik Aoki departed for Notre Dame. The 2000 BC graduate enters his first season as head coach of the Eagles after spending the last four years as an assistant coach on the Virginia Tech coaching staff. Mike Gambino named Boston College Head Baseball Coach

MikeGambinoBostonCollege CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Mike Gambino, a 1999 graduate of Boston College, has been named head baseball coach, Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo announced today.

Gambino, who was an assistant coach for the Eagles from 2003-05, replaces Mik Aoki who resigned to become the head coach at Notre Dame.

"We are very excited to bring back Mike Gambino as our new head coach," DeFilippo said. "As a former player and assistant coach here, Mike has the experience and passion to bring the baseball program to the next level. He has already hit the ground running."
