Big Ten Announces Sites for Future Baseball Tournaments

Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced on Friday the sites for its 2013 and 2014 baseball tournaments. The 2013 Big Ten Baseball Tournament will be held at Target Field in Minneapolis, the home of Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins, marking the first time that the event will be held at a Major League Baseball facility. The 2014 tournament will be held at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb., the site of the NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series.

The Big Ten Baseball Tournament has been played as a neutral-site event in Columbus, Ohio, since 2009. The event was held at Huntington Park, the home of the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, in 2009 and 2011 and will be played at that ballpark May 23-26, 2012. The tournament was held at Ohio State’s Bill Davis Stadium in 2010. Prior to 2009, the Big Ten Baseball Tournament was played at the site of the regular-season champion or the champion from a pre-selected division, with the exception of 1993 and 1994, when it was held in Battle Creek, Mich.

Big Ten Week in Review

The Hoosiers dropped two of three games at Cal State Northridge over the weekend. Indiana has lost five of its past six games. Freshman Chad Clark leads the team with a .419 average. Three starters have ERAs below 3.00 and sophomore Matt Dearden leads all hurlers with a 1.50 ERA and 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Indiana returns to play with a two-game set at San Diego on Tuesday and Wednesday before playing Loyola Maryland over the weekend. The Hoosiers are in the midst of eight games in California. 2012 Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – After winning a share of the Big Ten title for the first time since 1979, Michigan State has been selected by the conference coaches as the favorite to win in 2012, the Big Ten office announced on Tuesday. The conference’s baseball coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three players from their own squads to a Players to Watch list. Following the Spartans on the coaches’ preseason top six list are No. 2 Purdue, No. 3 Minnesota, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Illinois. Continue reading

We continue the countdown today at number 34 with Michigan State senior RHP Tony Bucciferro. The Joliet, Illinois native attended Minooka Community High School. His high school career saw him go 21-1 with an ERA of 1.50 in two years on the varsity squad. Continue reading

Michigan State releases 2012 Schedule

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State baseball program has announced its 2012 schedule.

Highlights on the schedule include 22 home games at McLane Baseball Stadium, a three-game series at 2011 College World Series participant Texas A&M, the sixth annual Crosstown Showdown against the Lansing Lugnuts on April 5 at Cooley Law School Stadium, and the second annual “Clash at Comerica” vs. Central Michigan on May 15 at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit. MSU will play five teams that earned bids to the NCAA Tournament last season (St. John’s, Texas A&M, Baylor, Seton Hall, Illinois). Continue reading

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Drew Farber homered and knocked in both runs as UNCW fell to visiting Team USA, 9-2, in a fall baseball exhibition game on Saturday at Brooks Field.

Team USA, backed by home runs off the bats of Jesse Winker and Joey Gallo, took advantage of six Seahawk errors in the field by plating five unearned runs. Continue reading

Cape League announces 2011 All-Star Team

CAPE COD, Mass. – Commissioner Paul Galop has announced the 2011 Cape Cod Baseball League All-League Team.

Heading the list of positional players is CCBL Most Valuable Player Travis Jankowski (Stony Brook) of Bourne, who hit .329 with 22 RBIs for the Bourne Braves, along with batting champion Stephen Piscotty (Stanford) of Yarmouth-Dennis, who hit .349, edging out fellow All-League catcher Dane Phillips (Oklahoma State) of Chatham by a mere .0002.
