BATON ROUGE — LSU right-hander Joey Bourgeois allowed only one hit through seven shutout innings and catcher Micah Gibbs delivered two RBI as No. 1 LSU held off a late Pepperdine rally to beat the Waves, 3-2, Saturday night in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU (10-0) is off to its best start since 1997 when the Tigers started that season with a 19-0 mark. Saturday’s win was the Tigers’ 16th-straight home victory, dating back to last season.

BATON ROUGE — An eight-run LSU second inning along with homers by designated hitter Matt Gaudet, second baseman Tyler Hanover and right fielder Mikie Mahtook lifted the top-ranked Tigers to a 13-7 victory over Brown Friday night in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU (9-0) has won nine straight games to start the season for the second year in a row. Brown falls to 1-1 with the loss.

#3 Virginia 6 #16 East Carolina 2

DannyHultzenUVA GREENVILLE, N.C. – The No. 2 Virginia baseball team opened the 2010 season strong with a 6-2 victory over No. 11 East Carolina Friday afternoon in front of 5,012 fans at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Cavaliers rallied by scoring six unanswered runs over the final six innings.

Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.) had a big day at the plate and on the mound for Virginia. Hultzen earned the win and went six strong innings as UVa’s starting pitcher, allowing two earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out four. After a shaky opening inning where he allowed both runs as well as two walks, Hultzen settled down to surrender just two hits and a walk over the final five innings. At the plate, Hultzen added two hits, including a double, and scored twice.

2010 MAC Preseason Coaches Poll


BallState Cleveland, Ohio – Defending MAC Regular Season Champion Bowling Green and defending West Division Champion Ball State have been chosen by the league’s head coaches to win their respective divisions, released today by the league office. The Cardinals were also selected by six of the leagues head coaches to take home the 2010 MAC Tournament title.

The Falcons were followed by 2009 MAC Tournament Champion Kent State in the East, while Ohio was picked to finish third. Miami was selected to finish in fourth place, while Akron was tabbed to place fifth. Buffalo rounded out this year’s East Division predictions.

Miami (OH) Names Former RedHawk George Stegmiller Honorary Coach for 2010


georgestegmiller OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University baseball head coach Dan Simonds has announced that former RedHawk George Stegmiller will serve as the honorary coach for the 2010 season. The honor is bestowed upon someone who has close ties with the Miami baseball program and displays the qualities of a Miami baseball player, such as character, integrity and leadership, in his life and in society.

Miami (OH) releases 2010 Slate


DanSimondsMiamiOH OXFORD, Ohio – Highlighted by 23 home games and contests against four 2009 NCAA Tournament participants, head coach Dan Simonds has released Miami University’s 2010 baseball schedule. Miami will play its first 15 games away from Oxford before hosting Northern Kentucky March 17.

The RedHawks open their 2010 campaign at Clemson Feb. 19, facing a Tiger team that made the NCAA Super Regionals a year ago and finished 14th in the nation. It will be Miami’s first meeting with Clemson since 1965 – the only other time the ‘Hawks have played the Tigers. While in South Carolina, Miami will also face Furman Feb. 20 — having traveled to Greenville, S.C. in 2006 as well — and Michigan State Feb. 21 in a neutral-site game in Greenville. The RedHawks last faced the Spartans in 1979 when they fell in the NCAA Mideast Regional.

MAC Announces Baseball Players & Pitchers of the Week

East Division Player of the Week
Tommy Nurre, Miami, First Base
Senior, Cincinnati, Ohio (St. Xavier)

Nurre led Miami to a 4-1 week, including the RedHawks’ first series sweep since April 27-29, 2007. Miami outscored its opponents 55-24 over the five-game week. Nurre was 11-for-20 for the week (.550) and recorded 10 runs and six RBIs while drilling six extra-base hits (four doubles and two home runs). He recorded an impressive 1.050 slugging percentage.
