The CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the countdown today at number 88 with Matt Jensen of Cal Poly. He is from Clovis California where he attended Clovis East High School. He picked up four letters playing under head coach Jeff Prieto where he hit .458 with six doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 36 runs scored. Jensen was also solid on the mound as he went 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA while striking out 55 batters in 52 innings as he threw two complete games and a shutout. He picked up several honors including All-Tri-River Athletic Conference honors all four years and also earned All-Valley and All-Regional honors. He was also named a third-team All-American as a senior. The Seattle Mariners selected him in the 11th round in the 2008 MLB draft but Jensen decided to head to Cal Poly to play under Larry Lee.

COTUIT —- The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox took a 2-1 victory from the Cotuit Kettleers on Thursday in Game 2 of the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series to stay alive for another day.
“We didn’t know what would happen,” Y-D field manager Scott Pickler said. “That was our goal, just to score the first run. That’s a very good team in the other dugout.”

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 23 Orleans Firebirds 10
Orleans starting pitcher Martin Viramontes (Loyola-Marymount) had one of the worst pitching performances in recent memory on Monday evening in the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He ended up lasting only 0.2 innings giving up nine hits, one walk, and ten runs (all earned) as the Red Sox cruised to the 23-10 victory to take a 1-0 series lead.

CARY, N.C. — Matt Jensen’s (Cal Poly) grand slam in the top of the sixth inning lifted the Red team to a 5-3 win over the Blue squad in Game 6 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials Sunday afternoon at the National Training Complex (NTC). With the win Red improved to 3-1-2, while Blue dropped to 2-1-3.

CARY, N.C. — Blue jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated the Red squad 6-1 Thursday night in Game 3 of the Collegiate National Team (CNT) Trials at the National Training Complex (NTC).
With the win the Blue team improves to 1-1-1, while the Red falls to 1-1-1.
