NAIA Opening Round Recap for May 20th

NAIA Baseball National Championship

Five of the nine slots for the NAIA Baseball National Championship in Lewiston, ID were filled today, with Oklahoma City, Cal Baptist, Lee, Belhaven, and Point Loma Nazarene.

#3 Cal Baptist defeated #10 Madonna 11-4 at Riverside, CA. The Crusaders led 4-1 after three innings, but Mike Barro came in as a reliever for the Lancers, and allowed one hit during the last six innings. DH Drew Madrigal batted in the winning run in the fifth inning; he was 2-5 with two RBI for the game. This will be the Lancers’ second trip to the National Championship.

#4 Lee defeated William Jewell 9-6 in Cleveland, TN. The game was tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the sixth; J.J. Costantino hit a triple, then scored on an error to get the winning run for the Flames. This will be Lee’s fourth straight trip to Lewiston. William Jewell is moving to Division II. NAIA Top 25 and Recap for May 12th

Results of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll for May 12, 2010, and Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating. This is the final poll for the 2010 season, and will be used for seeding the NAIA Opening Round tournaments, which start May 18. (poll below)

Henry Buenrostro#1 Lewis-Clark State defeated Division III George Fox 7-3, and defeated Division I Seattle U. Twice, 8-7 and 5-3. The game against George Fox was tied in the seventh inning, and the Warriors needed an RBI single by Jack Eccles and a sacrifice fly by Kawika Emsley-Pai to get the first win against Seattle U. Hentry Buenrostro got a win in this game, and a save in the second game. Arlo Evasick went 7 2/3 innings for the Redhawks in the second game. He held the Warriors to one run during the first seven innings, but gave up a three-run home run by DH Pat Murray with two out in the eighth to get the loss. The three runs were unearned, and the home run was only the fourth hit given up by Evasick.

The regular season is over for the Warriors, and they finished it with a 16-game winning streak. A game scheduled at Gonzaga next week was cancelled, and the Redhawks were the only Division I team the Warriors played this year. NAIA recap for March 3rd

#1 Lubbock Christian won two of three against University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, and swept a double-header against University of the Southwest. The Chaparrals are now 13-6. Their leading hitter is C Joe Staley with a .455 average, and their ERA and strikeout leader is Paul Gonzalez, 2-1, 1.11 ERA, and 29 strikeouts with 24 1/3 innings pitched. Upcoming: at Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-3 with two wins over Wayland Baptist) March 5-6, Angelo State March 9. The Angelo State double-header will be televised by Stretch Internet.

#2 Lewis-Clark State is 12-1, and their two most recent wins were against in-state rival College of Idaho, 16-8 and 7-6. In the second game, RF Gino Casini drew a base-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to bring in the winning run. Colby Hawk is 3-0, 0.00 ERA for the Warriors; Tyler Lichty is 2-0, 1.47 ERA, 17 strikeouts. Upcoming: Division II Central Washington March 6-7.

#3 British Columbia has started their season 10-1. They have yet to play a home game, and their only loss was 6-2 to #10 Fresno Pacific. 3B Keaton Briscoe is batting .400 for the Thunderbirds, CF Blake Carruthers is batting .387. RHP Taylor King is 1-0, 1.23 ERA with three saves, LHP Mark Hardy is 2-1, 3.00 ERA with 20 strikeouts. Upcoming: at Corban March 5-6. Continue reading NAIA recap for March 3rd

Results from first day of the first-ever NAIA sectional tournaments, officially the Baseball National Championship Opening Round, for May 12:

At Lubbock, TX:

#1 Lubbock Christian picked up where they left off in the regular season, defeating William Jewell 28-2. The Chaparrals scored seven runs in the second inning, and 18 runs in the eighth inning. William Jewell used six pitchers.

Southern States Athletic Conference – at Columbus, GA: #6 Southern Polytechnic defeated #4 Berry 9-3 for the
championship. Jake Barrow was 3-4 with a double and two RBI for the Hornets; starter David Harden went eight innings, scattered eight hits.

Southern States Athletic Conference - at Columbus, GA: #6 Southern Polytechnic took #8 Lee out of the tournament with a 6-3 win. Southern Polytechnic then lost to #4 Berry 9-3; Jason Dorcey pitched a complete game for the Vikings. The Hornets and Vikings will play one more game on Sunday for the championship.
