atlanticsunlogo.jpgMACON, Ga. – For the second time in the past three seasons, FGCU and Mercer shared the top spot in the Atlantic Sun Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll. The two teams previously tied in the 2011 poll. The Eagles and Bears both compiled 81 points in the poll with Mercer earning three first-place votes and FGCU receiving two first-place nods. 2011 Atlantic Sun Preseason Coaches Poll

MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun’s reigning regular-season and tournament champions, FGCU and Mercer shared the top spot in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced on Thursday. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman, the 2010 Player of the Year unanimously earned the preseason tag while FGCU’s all-conference starting pitcher, Richie Erath, received the Preseason Pitcher of the Year honor. 2011 CBD Season Preview: Atlantic Sun

The 2010 Atlantic Sun regular season saw Florida Gulf Coast dominate the conference with a 25-5 conference mark as second place Mercer finished six games back with a 16-11 record. East Tennessee State finished a game behind the Bears with a 15-12 record. North Florida and Jacksonville finished tied for fourth place with a 14-12 record. Stetson rounded out the qualifiers for the Atlantic Sun postseason tournament with a 14-13 record. Belmont at 13-13, Kennesaw State at 12-15, Lipscomb at 9-17, and Campbell at 8-19 were on the outside looking in at the postseason tournament while USC-Upstate went 8-19 as they were not eligible for the A-Sun tournament as they are undergoing an NCAA Reclassifying period. Powered by three home runs and outstanding relief pitching, No. 4 Florida (34-12) dealt Sun Belt Conference leader Florida Atlantic (31-19) a 7-3 setback on Wednesday night at McKethan Stadium. Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied the Gators’ single-season record homers by a freshman with his 16th to even the game in the third, senior Matt den Dekker (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) put the hosts in front with a two-run shot in the fifth and freshman Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) provided insurance with a two-run blast in the seventh.

Senior Jeff Barfield (Perry, Ga.) (3-0) tossed four scoreless frames to collect the win and the trio of sophomore Tommy Toledo (Tampa, Fla.), sophomore Greg Larson (Longwood, Fla.) and junior Kevin Chapman (Coral Springs, Fla.) each threw one scoreless inning as Florida improved to 24-3 at home this season.

SHREVEPORT, La. — Shortstop Austin Nola was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, and the fifth-ranked Tigers pounded 15 hits to top No. 30 Northwestern State, 14-3, Tuesday night at Fair Grounds Field.

The Tigers (31-6) will be back in action Wednesday when they play host to Northwestern State (25-11) in Alex Box Stadium at 6:30 p.m., as the two teams will meet for the second time in two days.

FAYETTEVILLE – With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, pinch hitter Tom Hauskey delivered his second-game winning hit of the season to send the No. 7 University of Arkansas baseball team to a 4-3 win over New Mexico Tuesday night at Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks trailed by two runs in the 10th inning and completed their come-from-behind victory with Hauskey’s base hit to right field.

"(Hauskey) handles the situation," head coach Dave Van Horn said. "He doesn’t try to do too much. He just takes what the pitcher gives him and he’s done a great job for us."

#16 Arkansas 3 McNesse State 2

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Brett Eibner had two hits and scored the eventual game-winning run, while the Razorback pitchers totaled 11 strikeouts Tuesday night as the No. 16 University of Arkansas baseball team held off McNeese State, 3-2, at Cowboy Diamond in Lake Charles, La. TJ Forrest picked up the win in a relief appearance and Jeremy Heatley earned his first career save. The Cowboys had the game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth but Blake Ellender grounded into the game-ending double play to send Arkansas (14-5) to victory.

"It was a well-played game," head coach Dave Van Horn said. "They were one big hit away from beating us and we were one big hit from taking a three- or four-run lead. We took advantage of the few hits we got. Both teams played solid defense and made a couple of nice plays."

Atlantic Sun releases Preseason Coaches Poll and Team

atlantic-sun-logo MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun conference announced its baseball preseason coaches’ poll and all-conference honors Wednesday with FGCU earning the nod as the conference favorite.

The Eagles also cleaned up in the superlative awards with first baseman Zach Maxfield earned the preseason Player of the Year honors and Chris Sale picked up the Pitcher of the Year nod by a unanimous decision.
