TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Sophomore southpaw Mike Minor struck out a career-high batters in a complete game 2-1 win over Alabama Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Vanderbilt improved to 14-4 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, while Alabama dropped to 9-11 and 0-4 in league play.

Minor (3-1) struck out a career best 12 batters while allowing just an unearned run on eight hits in his second complete game of the season. Continue reading

UK completes sweep of Alabama

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Senior second baseman Ryan Wilkes belted his third home run in as many games, as the No. 4 Kentucky baseball team notched a 5-1 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide, securing the sweep in the first Southeastern Conference series of the season.

The sweep marks UK’s first SEC-opening sweep since the 1996 season, when UK swept a series with Ole Miss. The win completes the Wildcats first sweep over Alabama since the 1992 season.

Wilkes and Carroll led the way for the Wildcats, with Carroll finishing the day a perfect 2-for-2, with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. For the year, Carroll is batting .532 (33-for-62), with eight doubles, a triple, seven homers, and 32 RBI, drawing a team-best 17 walks to just seven strikeouts. Kentucky hammers Bama 15-2

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Eight of nine position starters contributed an RBI and Collin Cowgill and Ryan Wilkes each added home runs for the second consecutive game, as the No. 4 Kentucky baseball team rolled over the Alabama Crimson Tide, 15-2, securing the three-game series, on Saturday at Cliff Hagan Stadium. FULLERTON, Calif. – The 21st-ranked University of San Diego baseball team scored four unanswered runs in picking up a 6-2 win over No. 16 Cal State Fullerton Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Goodwin Field.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-7 overall and improve to 6-1 against ranked opponents this season. With the loss, the Titans fall to 8-5, suffered their first home loss of the season and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. Continue reading

Kentucky sweeps Purdue

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Freshman shortstop Chris Wade launched a grand slam over the left-center field fence in the sixth inning, breaking open a 2-1 game, to lead the No. 4 Kentucky baseball team to a 6-1 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in game one of a twinbill, on Monday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

Wade launched his third homer of the season, busting open what had been a pitching duel through the first five frames. Wade, who extended his hit streak to a team-high 10 games, has hit homers in two consecutive games. Wade finished the day 1-for-2 with four RBI. Continue reading

Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. Western Michigan entered the game having scored at least 15 runs in three of its last five games, but McDonald kept the Bronco bats silent all afternoon. Continue reading

NCBWA Names Pro-Line Athletic Players of the Week for March 4th

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 4, today. Kentucky junior outfielder Sawyer Carroll was named National Hitter of the Week, while Southern Miss senior right-hander Barry Bowden and Norfolk State’s senior right-hander Joey Seal were named National Co-Pitchers of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
