Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Preview (April 1st-3rd)

The Missouri Valley Conference enters its last weekend of non-conference play, with many teams looking to finalize their lineups and pitching rotations before their conference series begin next week. Creighton holds the best record in the MVC at 17-5, with Wichita State in second at 17-8, and the Redbirds of Illinois State tied with Bradley for third at 15-7. 2011 Atlantic Sun Preseason Coaches Poll

MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun’s reigning regular-season and tournament champions, FGCU and Mercer shared the top spot in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced on Thursday. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman, the 2010 Player of the Year unanimously earned the preseason tag while FGCU’s all-conference starting pitcher, Richie Erath, received the Preseason Pitcher of the Year honor. 2011 CBD Season Preview: Atlantic Sun

The 2010 Atlantic Sun regular season saw Florida Gulf Coast dominate the conference with a 25-5 conference mark as second place Mercer finished six games back with a 16-11 record. East Tennessee State finished a game behind the Bears with a 15-12 record. North Florida and Jacksonville finished tied for fourth place with a 14-12 record. Stetson rounded out the qualifiers for the Atlantic Sun postseason tournament with a 14-13 record. Belmont at 13-13, Kennesaw State at 12-15, Lipscomb at 9-17, and Campbell at 8-19 were on the outside looking in at the postseason tournament while USC-Upstate went 8-19 as they were not eligible for the A-Sun tournament as they are undergoing an NCAA Reclassifying period. Kennesaw State releases 2011 Schedule

KennesawOwlsScheduleKENNESAW, Ga. – Head Coach Mike Sansing and the Owls have announced the release of the 2011 baseball schedule that features 31 home games and includes visits to Stillwell Stadium by Georgia Tech, Georgia and Tennessee.

The Owls 56-game schedule will feature home-and-home games with both the Yellow Jackets and the Bulldogs and a first-time visit to campus by the Volunteers. The Black and Gold will play Tennessee on March 30 in a Wednesday evening game.

ATLANTA – Mark Pope scattered four hits over eight innings, while Matt Skole and Chase Burnette hit home runs to lead the second-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (26-3, 11-1 ACC) over Kennesaw State (13-18, 4-5 A-Sun), 8-2, Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The eight innings were a career high for Pope, who improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. The sophomore right-hander struck out six batters, allowing just two runs to cross the plate.

#2 Virginia 17 Towson 4

GraepelUNC CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team parlayed a pair of huge innings into a 17-4 victory over Towson Wednesday in front of 2,042 fans at Davenport Field. Virginia racked up 16 hits, including seven of the extra-base variety, in the dominating victory.

Virginia’s Jarrett Parker (Jr., Stafford, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI, while Steven Proscia (So., Suffern, N.Y.) snapped out of a recent slump with two triples and four RBI. Stephen Bruno (Fr., Audubon, N.J.) fell a home run shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. David Coleman (Jr., Richmond, Va.) also hit a home run for the Cavaliers.

BATON ROUGE – A four-RBI performance by first baseman Blake Dean, along with 10 extra-base hits by the LSU offense, lifted the top-ranked Tigers to an 18-7 victory over UL-Monroe Tuesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (12-0) are off to their best start since 1997 when that team started the season 19-0. The win was also LSU’s 18th-straight home victory dating back to last season. ULM dropped to 5-5 with the loss.

BATON ROUGE – Freshman left-hander Jordan Rittiner allowed only one earned run in six innings, and centerfielder Leon Landry went 3-for-4 with two triples, as No.1 LSU topped Brown, 9-2, Sunday afternoon in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (11-0) will host UL-Monroe in a mid-week contest beginning Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium. LSU will then travel to Shreveport to take on Northwestern State Wednesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to play host to Kansas in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.

The Binghamton Bearcats picked up a shocking win on Friday night over the Tennessee Volunteers but on Saturday afternoon, the struggles continued. Kennesaw State ended up grabbing a 4-2 victory over the Volunteers behind a strong pitching performances from Josh Carr and J.B. Johnson
