Here is your 2011 NCAA Fullerton Regional Day 2 Recap.
Illinois 5 Kansas State 3
FULLERTON, Calif. – Senior pitcher John Anderson pitched into the ninth inning, allowing only one earned run on seven hits and a walk, and shortstop Josh Parr drove in three runs to lift the fourth-seeded Illini over No. 3 seed Kansas State, 5-3, in an elimination game at the NCAA Tournament’s Fullerton Regional on Saturday. Anderson stymied a potent Wildcat offense in his 110-pitch effort and eight of nine Illinois starters recorded a hit as the Illini advance to face the winner of the Cal State Fullerton/Stanford game at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday. After shuffling their lineup throughout the season due to injury (15 batters started in 14 games or more), the Fullerton Titans are primed for a postseason run and attempt to make it to their 6th College World Series in the last decade. The Titans have sent out a ton of inexperienced players this season, yet finished the year with a 40-15 record and won the Big West yet again at a 19-5 clip. With the end of the Big 12 regular season upon us, its time to look at the individual players that stood out at their respective positions. Some of the top players aren’t a surprise, but there are a few notable subtractions that would’ve been hard predictions before the season began, notably at third base where Nebraska junior Cody Asche held steady at the end to pass a hard-slumping Oklahoma junior Garrett Buechele, a preseason favorite for Player of the Year honors.
Texas A&M OF Tyler Naquin finished the season strong, claiming Player of the Year honors. The sophomore led the league in average, hits, and runs scored, while finishing among the top 10 in five other categories. Continue reading College Baseball Daily 2011 All-Big 12 Team/All-Freshman Team
With only a few weeks left until the postseason starts, the Big 12 features three conference series, two out-of-conference series, and a pair of teams taking the weekend off.
Texas travels north to take on Nebraska for the final time as conference opponents. The Longhorns took a pair from the Sooners last weekend, giving them an important boost in the standings, and setting up a possible winner-take-all showdown against Texas A&M to close out the regular season. Taylor Jungmann is one of the best overall players in the nation, and Cole Green has steadied after a rough start. The Longhorns are still looking for a third starter to pick up the slack. The player to watch is SS Brandon Loy. Loy has always had an excellent glove and arm, and has found his stroke this season. Continue reading Big 12 Weekend Preview (5/6-5/8)
