2011 MLB Draft News and Notes for August 5th

The MLB Signing Deadline is fast approaching as all teams have to midnight on August 15th to sign their prospects or they will head to college. Here is the latest news and notes from around the country.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reported that Red Sox first round pick and 26th overall selection Blake Swihart took batting practice on Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park. Swihart is currently committed to Texas where he will play for Augie Garrido. If I had to guess right now, I would expect the Red Sox to sign Swihart for over the $1.2 million due to him with the slotting system.  Continue reading 2011 MLB Draft News and Notes for August 5th

Top 100 Countdown: 44. Johnny Ruettiger (Arizona State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 44 with Arizona State junior outfielder Johnny Ruettiger. The Joliet, Illinois, native attended Joliet Catholic Academy as he  picked up three letters in baseball serving as the team captain for two years. As a senior, he went 11-2 on the mound while having a career batting average of .450. He was named a Rawlings All-American while also being named conference player of the year and first team all-state. He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 35th round (1,053rd overall) in the 2008 MLB Draft but decided to head to Arizona State. Continue reading Top 100 Countdown: 44.
