2011 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List down to 10

As teams look toward Super Regional play, the list of players in the running for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award has been narrowed to 10.

USA Baseball Announces 30 Semifinalists for 2011 Golden Spikes Award

DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Tuesday the names of the 30 semifinalists for the 2011 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award (GSA). CBD Column: St. John’s News and Notes (Video)

I took in the St. John’s vs Holy Cross matchup on Sunday afternoon in Worcester Massachusetts. The Red Storm were able to come away with a 8-2 victory over the Crusaders behind a solid start from Brendan Lobban who gave up two runs in the first inning before settling down. Another day is in the books as we are now two days into the season as there was several upsets in the NCBWA Top 35.

Foley’s Quick Hits from Feb. 18th

The first day of College Baseball is in the books with some interesting results. The season isn’t a sprint but a bad start to the season could always affect your chances at making the NCAA Baseball Tournament in May. All of the top 35 teams were scheduled to be in action but number nine ranked Cal-State Fullerton was rained out at Long Beach State. The only ranked matchup was between the Stanford Cardinal who visited the Rice Owls. Here are some of my thoughts on the first night of action in College Baseball. I will try to do these every night throughout the season especially on weekends. If I missed a great performance or a great storyline please leave your comments below. Top 100 Countdown: 81. Joe Panik (St. John’s)

JoePanikHeadshotThe CBB continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 81 with St. John’s junior shortstop Joe Panik. He is from Hopewell Junction, New York and attended John Jay High School. He was a four year letterwinner with the Patriots as he was a two-time team captain, two-time all-state selection, and two-time all-section honoree. As a senior he was named sectional, league and county player of the year while leading the team to a league championship.

2010 Cape Cod Baseball All-League Team

CCBL_2007_250 Regular-season MVP Kolten Wong (Hawaii) and home run champion Jordan Ribera (Fresno State) lead the list of stars who were named to the 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League’s All-League team that was announced by commissioner Paul Galop this weekend.

A total of 24 players were selected to the elite team, with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and the Orleans Firebirds each placing four on the squad. The lone representative from the Cape League champion Cotuit Kettleers is starting pitcher Austin Wood (St. Petersburg), who went 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA this season.

Cotuit takes Game 1 of Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series

MattAndrieseCalRiverside SOUTH YARMOUTH —- The Cotuit Kettleers rode the arm of Matt Andriese (Cal Riverside) to a 3-0 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on Wednesday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series at Red Wilson Field.

Andriese pitched a complete-game shutout to put his team one win away from the title. The series switches to Lowell Park for Thursday’s Game 2.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 23 Orleans Firebirds 10

Orleans starting pitcher Martin Viramontes (Loyola-Marymount) had one of the worst pitching performances in recent memory on Monday evening in the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. He ended up lasting only 0.2 innings giving up nine hits, one walk, and ten runs (all earned) as the Red Sox cruised to the 23-10 victory to take a 1-0 series lead.
