Foley’s Quick Hits for Feb. 19th

Another day is in the books as we are now two days into the season as there was several upsets in the NCBWA Top 35.

Foley’s Quick Hits from Feb. 18th

The first day of College Baseball is in the books with some interesting results. The season isn’t a sprint but a bad start to the season could always affect your chances at making the NCAA Baseball Tournament in May. All of the top 35 teams were scheduled to be in action but number nine ranked Cal-State Fullerton was rained out at Long Beach State. The only ranked matchup was between the Stanford Cardinal who visited the Rice Owls. Here are some of my thoughts on the first night of action in College Baseball. CBD Column: Scheduling Questions?

NCAA-BaseballLogoSmallThe LSU Tigers released their 2011 schedule a few weeks ago, which features your typical 56 games (30 SEC and 26 OOC). The interesting part is that they will only leave Alex Box Stadium for two out of conference road games and one neutral site game at Zephyr Field in Metairie, LA. Is it good for College Baseball to have a marquee program play mostly home games? I thought we would take this time to see how different coaches around the country put together their respective schedules.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team matched a season best with its seventh straight win Wednesday, as the Cavaliers recorded a 10-5 victory over Georgetown at Davenport Field.

Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) recorded his third career four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Reed Gragnani (Fr., Richmond, Va.) added two hits and two stolen bases. Eight of the nine Cavalier starters posted at least one hit as UVa finished with 13 hits in the game.

MarkPopeGT #2 Georgia Tech 8 Kennesaw State 2

ATLANTA – Mark Pope scattered four hits over eight innings, while Matt Skole and Chase Burnette hit home runs to lead the second-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (26-3, 11-1 ACC) over Kennesaw State (13-18, 4-5 A-Sun), 8-2, Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The eight innings were a career high for Pope, who improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. The sophomore right-hander struck out six batters, allowing just two runs to cross the plate.
