SoCal Roundup: Kissing Your Sister

With UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge not having lights at their fields, it opens up the possibility of being able to catch multiple games in one day when those teams play at home and then other Southern California squads host night games.

But not having lights also opens up the possibility of games being suspended, postponed or even called due to darkness. That was the case on Tuesday when UCLA visited Santa Barbara and ended up going into extra innings where the game came to a completely unsatisfactory conclusion after 12 innings.

Long Beach Shuts Down Cal Poly for Series Win

LONG BEACH, Calif. — With two outs in the first inning, Long Beach State first baseman Ino Patron hit a hard but seemingly innocuous grounder to first base. But the ball squirted past Tim Wise, allowing Patron to reach. Back-to-back base hits by Richard Prigatano and Michael Hill plated Patron with an unearned run.

That was it.

For the next eight innings, neither No. 2 Cal Poly nor the Dirtbags (20-21, 7-5) could scratch across a run as Long Beach State took a 1-0 victory and the biggest series win in Troy Buckley’s head coaching tenure.

Fullerton Snaps 6-Game Losing Streak With Walk-Off

FULLERTON, Calif. — Rain was pouring down, drenching everything at Goodwin Field Friday night.

Cal State Fullerton’s players were doing the dreaded task of putting the tarp on the field. Yet, there was nothing but smiles on the Titans’ faces.

After a rough two weeks that featured a pair of Big West series losses, a 16-inning loss at Fresno State on Wednesday and their head coach being under an administrative investigation, the Titans finally had something to smile about.

For 21.1 straight innings, Cal State Fullerton (19-17, 4-6) had been held scoreless. But with two outs and a pair of runners on base, Tanner Pinkston grounded one up the middle and Jared Deacon raced home from second base to give the Titans a 1-0 win over Hawai’i (15-23, 3-10)  in 10 innings.

Trojans Snap 9-Game Losing Streak Against UCLA

Timmy Robinson wasn’t on the roster the last time USC defeated crosstown rival UCLA. He was still in high school. But the sophomore outfielder blasted a three-run homer in the first inning to help the Trojans end a nine-game losing streak to their crosstown rivals with a 10-0 victory Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. SoCal Roundup: Best Catcher in the Country?

In college baseball, starting catchers often get the mid-week games off to rest their legs in preparation for the more important weekend series, especially during the conference season, but with an extra day of rest thanks to the Easter schedule, Shane Zeile was behind the plate for UCLA on Tuesday.

He proved to be a difference maker in the Bruins’ matchup with Loyola Marymount and afterwards his coach lauded high praise on him, calling Zeile one of the top catchers in the country.

Check out how Zeile impacted the game, what else Savage had to say about him and get the full roundup of Tuesday’s Southern California college baseball action. We’ve got you covered with photo galleries from San Diego State, USC and UCLA:

SoCal Roundup: Snapping Sweep Droughts

Cal State Fullerton and USC both ended lengthy conference series droughts. But only one team did it in a positive fashion. Fittingly, UC Santa Barbara/Long Beach State and San Diego State/UC Irvine concluded their series with yet another tight game in each series finale.

SoCal Roundup: Pitcher BOMB

Rick Vanderhook didn’t travel with the team to San Luis Obispo and probably wouldn’t have liked what he saw had he went anyway. The nation’s top two closers, Sam Moore and Michael Cederoth, ended up deciding a game. See who came out on top.

But two unlikely heroes headline Thursday’s Southern California college baseball roundup that features video interviews and photo galleries from Northridge and Long Beach State:

SoCal Roundup: Frosh SS Web Gems

Both Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount have both been strong defensively and are among the top West Coast Conference teams, despite having to rely on a pair of freshmen shortstops.

But rather than being bothered by being thrust into the fire, Manny Jefferson and David Fletcher have thrived under the pressures of being regular starters for regional contenders just a season removed from high school ball. Both players made major contributions with the glove on Tuesday.
