SoCal Roundup: Dull Aces

There were some aces that were missing their sharp kitchen utensils on Friday afternoon. Instead of knifing through lineups like they were ripened pears, pitchers like West Virginia’s Harrison Musgrave, Irvine’s Andrew Morales and Fullerton’s Thomas Eshelman struggled to have the success they normally have.

Granted, those three staff aces are still going to give their team a chance to compete every time out, so were their squads able to pick them up when they didn’t have their A+ stuff?

Sunday Roundup (2/23)

Sunday’s action saw Cal Poly get a pivotal series-clinching win in the rubber game over UCLA 9-1. The victory was huge for the Mustangs, who dropped the first game on Friday only to show a lot of character and bounce back with two straight wins on the road to take the series. Offensively Nick Torres and Brian Mundell continued to be the story as the duo combined for five hits and five RBI on the day. Mundell homered in all three games of the series and raised his average to a red-hot .455 on the season. Continue reading

2014 Big Ten Preseason Poll

BigTenLogoRosemont, Ill. – Indiana was the unanimous choice by the conference coaches as the preseason favorite to claim the Big Ten Championship, it was announced on Wednesday. The conference’s coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three players from their own squads to a Players to Watch list. The Hoosiers were followed in the preseason poll by No. 2 Nebraska, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan State, with Illinois and Michigan tied for fifth.

The Hoosiers return seven of their nine All-Big Ten honorees from last year’s College World Series squad, including third baseman Dustin DeMuth, catcher Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Sam Travis, who were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The trio each earned Preseason All-America accolades from various outlets, with Schwarber being a unanimous pick from Baseball America, College Baseball Newspaper and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). 2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 7. Kyle Schwarber (Indiana)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 7 on the countdown is Indiana junior Kyle Schwarber. The Middletown, Ohio native attended Middletown High School where he was a four time team MVP. As a senior, he hit .474 with eight homeruns and .643 on-base percentage while driving in 28 and stealing eleven bases. Continue reading

CBD Top 100 Countdown: 63. Sam Travis (Indiana)

In his sophomore campaign with the Hoosiers, Travis started all 65 games in a tough Big Ten schedule. During the 2013 season the 6’0” infielder batted an impressive .316 and ranked second in the Big Ten with 22 doubles, 57 RBI, 10 homeruns, 133 total bases and 39 walks. Travis earned a Second Team All-Big Ten selection and helped lead the Hoosiers to their first College World Series appearance in program history. Along the way the third baseman earned Most Outstanding Player awards at both the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Bloomington Regional. Continue reading

2013 CWS: Oregon State 1 Indiana 0

MattBoydFeaturedOMAHA, Neb. – After taking a loss to Mississippi State earlier in the week, Oregon State’s Matt Boyd bounced back to shut out Indiana for the first time this season with a 1-0 win for the Beavers on Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

OSU improves to 52-12 on the season and 2-1 in the College World Series while Indiana ends its season at 49-16. The Beavers will face a CWS undefeated Mississippi State on Friday at 2 p.m. CT in a win-or-go-home matchup. Continue reading

2013 CWS: Mississippi State 5 Indiana 4

MississippiStateTeamMeeting2OMAHA, Neb. – The crowd roared and the Mississippi State dugout exploded as Trey Porter’s eighth inning single plated the go-ahead run to give MSU a 5-4 win over Indiana on Monday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

With the win, Mississippi State improves to 50-18 on the season and 2-0 in the College World Series. The win also gives the Bulldogs a three-day break between its next CWS games. Continue reading
