OMAHA, Neb. – Indiana’s left-handed pitcher Joey DeNato led the Hoosiers to a 2-0 shutout victory Saturday night over the Louisville Cardinals in the opening round of the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.
With the win, Indiana (49-18) advances in the winner’s bracket to face Mississippi State on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m. CT while Louisville (51-13) falls into the loser’s bracket and will face No. 3 Oregon State earlier that day at 2 p.m. CT. Continue reading
Mississippi State is coming off a super-regional victory over Virginia, wining 6-5 after an 18-hour rain delay. This is a heavily offense based team accumulating 30 hits over a two game span against Virginia. This will be the ninth appearance in the College World Series for the Bulldogs and first since 2007. A few notable players to keep an eye on include Wes Rea who is hitting .288 along with 37 RBIs and seven home runs, and Hunter Renfroe batting .360 with 61 RBIs and 15 homeruns, along with being drafted 13th overall in the MLB draft. Adam Frazier will also be one to keep an eye on with his .359 batting average and 38 RBIs. Mississippi State will face No.3 Oregon State in game one on Saturday with the winner advancing to take on the winner of Indiana vs. Louisville. They have shown that they can get a lead and hold on to it despite late comebacks. This may be a key factor for Mississippi State, if they can get out early then this team will be hard to beat. CINCINNATI – Indiana University pitching coach Ty Neal, who is regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in college baseball, has been named the University of Cincinnati’s 27th baseball head coach, director of athletics Whit Babcock announced Friday.
Neal, a native of Southwest Ohio, has spent the last eight seasons at IU as the program’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator. He was previously an assistant for the Bearcats in 2004 and both played and coached at Miami (Ohio). The Hoosiers, playing at Florida State this weekend for a berth in the College World Series, are currently ranked No. 8 nationally and playing in the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in school history. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University Baseball (48-14) is headed to the College World Series after completing a Super Regionals sweep over #7-seed Florida State (47-17). The Hoosiers topped FSU , 11-6, to become the first Big Ten school advancing to Omaha since 1984 (Michigan).
Freshman Will Coursen-Carr (5-0) earned the win on the mound, just as he did in the clinching victories of the Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Regional in his last two starts. To close out the Supers, Coursen-Carr delivered 4.0 stellar innings out of the bullpen giving up just one earned run. Continue reading
