2011 Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – After winning the Big Ten’s regular-season and tournament titles last season, Minnesota has been named the conference favorite for 2011, the Big Ten announced on Tuesday. For the first time in conference history, the Big Ten baseball coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three players from their teams for a Players to Watch list. Also among the top six projected finishers for the season were No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Indiana, No. 4 Michigan State, No. 5 Iowa and No. 6 Ohio State. 2011 CBD Season Preview: Big Ten

Heading into the 2010 campaign, everyone was talking about the Ohio State Buckeyes being the class of the Big Ten but they would be talking about the Gophers instead. The Big Ten ended up seeing the first place Minnesota Gophers (15-9) and last place Penn State Nittany Lions (9-15) separated by a measly six games. Michigan ended up finishing second with a 14-10 mark while Iowa and Northwestern finished at 13-11 in a tie for third place. Purdue and Indiana were also tied with a 12-12 mark for fifth place. Michigan State and Ohio State tied for seventh place with a record of 11-13 and Illinois finished in ninth with a 10-14 mark while Penn State rounded out the standings with their 9-15 record. Illinois releases 2011 Schedule

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois head coach Dan Hartleb announced his team’s schedule for the 2011 season Monday, with the team slated to play in the third-annual Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 18-20, and the Metrodome Tournament at 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifier Minnesota. The Illini will face three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago in 2010 – Minnesota, Illinois State and Saint Louis, and will play a three-game series at Florida Gulf Coast, which went 38-20 last season. The season start date of Feb. 18 will be the fourth-earliest start date in school history and earliest since Illinois started the 2001 season on Feb. 17. 2011 Big East/Big Ten Baseball Challenge Schedule Announced

BigEastLogoPROVIDENCE, R.I. – The schedule has been finalized for the 2011 BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, as announced by the BIG EAST and Big Ten conference offices Tuesday. Triple-headers on Friday and Saturday highlight a slate that features 24 games over three days, Feb. 18-20, 2011, at current and former major league facilities in the St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla., area.

Freshman Kevin Johnson tossed a complete-game shutout to lead Illinois to a 7-0 victory over Purdue on Saturday to even the series at 1-1. Johnson allowed six hits and two walks with four strikeouts en route to his fifth win of the season. Calvin Gunter took the loss for the Boilermakers. Casey McMurray led the Illini offense, going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs, two RBI and a pair of walks. Willie Argo went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and a stolen base. Tyler Spillner paced Purdue at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance.

Purdue maintained a share of the Big Ten lead with an 8-2 win at Illinois on Friday evening. The Boilermakers got big innings late in the game with a four-run sixth and a three-run eighth, led by Eric Charles and Kevin Plawecki, who both had a pair of RBI. Charles went 1-for-4 with a double, while Plawecki was 2-for-4 with his eighth home run. Matt Bischoff picked up his ninth win of the year in a complete-game effort, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Lee Zerrusen was tagged with the loss. Josh Parr led the Illini at the plate, going 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.

Illinois took Game 1 of its doubleheader with Michigan State on Friday, edging the Spartans, 4-3, in 10 innings. Casey McMurray led Illinois with two hits and three RBI, including a home run, also driving in what proved to be the game-winner in the top of the 10th. Wes Braun picked up the win in relief, throwing three scoreless innings. Bryan Roberts earned his sixth save with a clean 10th frame. Illinois starter Lee Zerrusen allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. Torsten Boss, Chris Roberts and Andy Johnson had two hits each to lead the Spartans. Tim Simpson took the loss in relief, while starter A.J. Achter threw nine innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.

Iowa won its Big Ten-opening series with a 4-2 victory in the rubber match on Sunday. Hawkeyes sophomore Phil Schreiber pitched a career-high eight innings, giving up one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Kevin Lee picked up his sixth save, retiring the side in order in the ninth. Zach McCool and Phil Keppler led the Iowa offense, each with two hits, one run and an RBI. Craig Lutes and Thomas Shelton had two hits each for the Illini, while Lutes scored a run and Shelton drove one in. Lee Zerrusen was tagged with the loss.
