TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – Senior Jonathan Griffin’s mammoth grand slam capped off a seven-run seventh in UCF’s wild 14-10 victory at No. 6 Florida State (35-12) Saturday. It was the Knights’ (29-18) third victory against a top-10 team this season (defeated top-five Florida twice), and they now have seven victories over ranked opponents on the year, which are the most since the 2004 roster also produced seven wins. INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State is a narrow choice to win the 2011 Horizon League Baseball Championship in balloting by the conference’s seven head coaches. The Raiders received 32 points and three first-place votes. Continue reading
Wright State won the 2010 Horizon League Regular Season title with a 17-6 overall record. Milwaukee finished in the runners-up position a game back with a 17-8 record while Illinois-Chicago finished third with a 15-9 record. Valparaiso came in fourth at 9-10 and Butler finished 11-13 for a fifth place finish. Youngstown State came in sixth with a 9-17 record and Cleveland State rounded out the conference with a 5-20 mark. Continue reading

#7 Georgia Tech 5 Illinois-Chicago 2
ATLANTA – Jed Bradley recorded 10 strikeouts en route to his fourth straight win, and Chase Burnette went 3-for-4 with a home run as No. 5 Georgia Tech (39-9) completed a three-game sweep of Illinois-Chicago (17-26) with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Jackets recorded their seventh weekend series sweep of the season with the win.
Bradley won his eighth game of the year after scattering two runs on eight hits over six frames. He struck out 10 batters while issuing just one walk. The sophomore left-hander has won four straight games.

#7 Georgia Tech 11 Illinois-Chicago 5
ATLANTA - Cole Leonida and Thomas Nichols drove in three runs apiece, and right-hander Brandon Cumpton picked up his seventh win of the season as Georgia Tech clinched the series with an 11-5 win over Illinois-Chicago Saturday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
With the win, the Jackets improved to 38-9 overall and matched their win total from 2009. Tech has had at least 38 wins in a season in 16 of head coach Danny Hall’s 17 years on the Flats. The Flames fell to 17-25 with the loss.

#7 Georgia Tech 8 Illinois-Chicago 4
ATLANTA – Derek Dietrich and Jeff Rowland reached base in every at-bat, and senior Tony Plagman drove in the go-ahead run with his 200th-career RBI to lead the fifth-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (37-9) over Illinois-Chicago (17-24), 8-4, Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Dietrich (4-for-4, RBI) and Rowland (3-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBI) paced the Jackets at the plate, as Dietrich hit two doubles and Rowland added a triple and home run while coming up a double short of the cycle. In addition to reaching base on every at-bat, Rowland scored all three times.
The ACC has a relatively light schedule this week with only three in-conference series. The best series is between Florida State and Boston College. Florida State enters that series with a three game led over Clemson while having only a 3.5 game lead over Boston College. The other series with some importance is between Wake Forest and North Carolina. The Tar Heels are in need of a sweep this weekend if they are going to get a bid into the ACC Tournament. The last ACC series is between Clemson and Maryland where the Tigers are looking to sweep the Terps. Georgia Tech heads out of conference against a feisty Illinois-Chicago squad, Barry University visits Miami (FL) for two games and Savannah State will face off against Virginia Tech to round out the ACC weekend slate. Chicago, IL – Not exactly a pitching clinic at Les Miller Field on a very pleasant Saturday as the University of Illinois Chicago Flames hosted the Butler Bulldogs for a Horizon League doubleheader. A combined 48 runs and 65 hits paired up with 6 errors made for an interesting 6:00 of baseball with UIC taking both games and sweeping the weekend series. The ball was flying out of the park in the early game with a total of 11 home runs smacked as the Flames won 21-11. In the second game doubles were more popular with a total of 13 hit in the UIC 12-4 win.
