CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dustin Ackley and Mark Fleury connected on three-run home runs in the fifth inning for just about all the offense No. 1 North Carolina would need in a 7-5 win over UNC Wilmington Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. Down 4-0 before the pair of homers, the Tar Heels (32-10) rallied for their largest come-from-behind victory of the season and their ninth straight over the Seahawks (21-15). Continue reading

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – High Point senior shortstop Alfie Wheeler (Manteo, N.C.) and Gardner-Webb senior Devin Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) have been named the Choice Hotels Player of the Week and New Balance Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 13-19, it was announced today by the League office. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ben Bunting went 3-for-5 with three RBI and tied a school record with two triples, and No. 4 North Carolina got eight strong innings from its bullpen in a 20-4 win over Winthrop Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Garrett Gore and Ryan Graepel also added three hits, as the Tar Heels (28-10) snapped a two-game losing skid with their biggest offensive outburst of the season. Continue reading

ATHENS, Ga. – Jed Bradley scattered five runs over six innings and Jason Haniger went 4-for-5 with a home run to help No. 10 Georgia Tech (22-8-1) knock off top-ranked Georgia (29-7), 11-6, Tuesday night at Foley Field.

Bradley (2-2) tied a career-high with seven strikeouts to help the Yellow Jackets to their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and their first against the nation’s top-ranked team since the 2003 season. The freshman lefty faced just one over the minimum from the third through fifth innings to earn his second win of the season. Continue reading

Big South Announces Preseason Baseball Poll and Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, the coaches voted Radford senior infielder Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
