UConn’s Justin Blood set to take over Hartford Baseball

College Baseball Daily has learned that current UConn Assistant Coach Justin Blood is set to take over the Hartford University baseball program. Blood has been a key member of the UConn baseball program recent upswing including being involved in recruiting both George Springer and Matt Barnes.

Jeff Calcaterra relieved as Hartford Head Coach

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Hartford Director of Athletics Patricia Meiser announced on Wednesday that the department will make a change in the leadership of the baseball program. Head coach Jeff Calcaterra has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately. Jerry Shank will assume the Interim Head Coaching position, while Inaki Ormaechea will remain in the role of an assistant coach. The University will immediately begin a nationwide search for Calcaterra’s successor.

2011 America East Preseason Coaches Poll

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— The Stony Brook Seawolves are the unanimous picks to win the 2011 America East Baseball Championship according to the preseason coaches’ poll and as voted on by all six of the league’s head coaches. After winning their second tournament title in three years in 2010, the Seawolves received all five possible first-place votes as head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. 2010 Preseason America East Poll


AmericaEastPoll CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— University of Maine is the favorite of the head coaches to capture the 2010 America East Baseball Championship in what would be the Black Bears’ first conference title since 2006. Maine, which finished fifth in 2009, garnered three of a possible five first-place votes and 23 total points. Head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams.

Stony Brook University, the 2008 America East Champion, was selected second with two first-place votes and 21 points, and Binghamton University, last year’s regular-season and tournament champion, finished third with the final first-place vote and 19 points. University at Albany (13 points), University of Hartford (9) and UMBC (5) rounded out the six-team poll.

Hartford releases 2010 Schedule


West Hartford, CT- University of Hartford baseball coach Jeff Calcaterra announced the 2010 schedule, which includes 50 games over 35 dates. The Hawks are scheduled to play on Fiondella Field a total of 29 times in 2010.

“As the winter workouts progress, the coaches and players are looking forward to the start of the 2010 season,” said Calcaterra. “The coaching staff believes that the 2010 non-conference schedule will provide the mental and physical challenges necessary to prepare our players for a run at a conference championship."

Hartford adds Jerry Shank to the Coaching Staff

Meiser and Head Baseball Coach Jeff Calcaterra announced the hiring of Jerry Shank as an assistant coach on Monday. Shank will serve as the Hawks’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

"I am very excited to announce the addition of Jerry Shank to our staff,” said Calcaterra. “Throughout the search process, Jerry exuded a passion for college baseball and will be a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. I also expect him to quickly develop a mutual respect and unique rapport with our players.  I’m looking forward to working with Jerry and the impact he will have on our program"
