Justin Blood and Sean Newcomb turning around Hartford Program

In three years, Sean Newcomb has done a lot for the Hartford baseball program.

His pitching perfection started earlier this season with a 0.00 ERA through his first six starts. This has brought on intense media attention while having MLB scouts to campus to the Hawks’ (18-14 overall, 6-2 America East) games, giving the program a boost in attention and his teammates who had not yet reached scouts’ radars a chance to grab their eye. Number 6 on the countdown is Hartford junior LHP Sean Newcomb. The Middleboro, Massachusetts native attended Middleboro High School where he went 9-0 with a 0.46 ERA and three saves as a senior in 58 innings pitched. Continue reading

2014 America East Preseason Coaches Poll

BinghamtonSlidingCAMBRIDGE, Mass. — For the first time in America East baseball history, two teams were selected as co-preseason favorites as Binghamton University and Stony Brook University tied atop the 2014 preseason coaches’ poll. The rain held out just long enough at Fiondella Field on Thursday, Sept. 8th for the Hawks to showcase their talent in front of Major League scouts. “It’s a great opportunity for our guys to get on the radar early”, said Head coach Justin Blood. After finishing 17-36 in the 2013 campaign, the Hawks look to up their game and get on a winning track. Continue reading

2013 America East Preseason Coaches Poll

AmericaEastLogoCAMBRIDGE, Mass.— After a historic run to the College World Series, reigning America East champion and back-to-back regular-season title holder Stony Brook University was picked first in the 2013 America East Preseason Coaches’ poll as determined by a vote by the league’s six head coaches who were not allowed the vote for their own teams. Jeff Calcaterra named Assistant Coach at Hartford

Jeff Calcaterra has been named as Harvard’s top assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator by Bill Decker, the Joseph J. O’Donnell ’67 Head Coach for Harvard Baseball.

He most recently served as head coach at the University of Hartford from 2005 to 2011, winning 82 games. Prior to Hartford, Calcaterra spent 11 seasons as the full-time assistant coach at Indiana University. Continue reading

NCBWA March 27 National Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)  released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 25, today. Baylor junior first baseman Max Muncy was named National Hitter of the Week, while Hartford freshman left-hander Sean Newcomb was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
