Gonzaga releases 2015 Schedule

MarkMachtolfGonzaga_thumb.jpgSPOKANE, Wash.—Another tough slate of games awaits Gonzaga University’s baseball team in 2015 as the Zags will face five opponents from last season’s NCAA Tournament, as announced by Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf. In all, Gonzaga will take on seven squads combined from the PAC 12, Big 10, and SEC and see other competition from the American Athletic, Big West, and the Western Athletic Conferences.

Once again, the Zags will spend the first month of the season in warmer and drier climates, playing their first 17 games outside the Pacific Northwest. They start the season in Northridge, Calif., with Opening Day on Friday, Feb. 13 against Utah Valley. A day later, they face host school CSU Northridge. The Bulldogs will wrap up opening weekend with a split doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 15, playing Utah Valley in the morning and Cal State Northridge that afternoon. SoCal Roundup: West Coast Champs Crowned

Have to keep the roundup of the exciting final full day of Southern California action to a minimum tonight as I’m headed out from Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. after the WCC Championship and driving to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Mountain West finale tomorrow.

(Well, I ended up getting booted from Banner Island before I could finish up, so I made a pit stop in Barstow to rest the legs and finish up the SoCal Roundup. I will have more from the WCC Championship later when I arrive and settled in at UNLV.)

But here’s Saturday’s SoCal Roundup complete with photo galleries from Cal State Fullerton and Banner Island Ballpark:

SoCal Roundup: Justin Garza No Hitter

The Mountain West Conference Tournament had a couple of exciting finishes and officially has a team swinging a mean scythe. The West Coast Conference has its championship game participants and it will be a familiar face-off.

Oh…and some guy named Garza happened to throw nine innings without the other team getting a hit and there might have been an upset of the No. 1 team in the country.

All that plus more in a super exciting final Friday regular season edition of the Southern California College Baseball Roundup:

The West Coast Conference regular season title was up for grabs on the final day of regular season play and so were the final two spots in next week’s WCC Tournament. Who would travel to Stockton wouldn’t be determined until a walk-off victory settled it. But was it the San Diego Toreros, sitting at home watching the final games unfold on their computers, or one of the teams in action when it was all settled?

What in the West Coast Conference is Going On?

After a three-year hiatus, the West Coast Conference re-established an end-of-the-season battle for supremacy. From 1999 to 2005, the West Coast Conference featured a championship series, pitting the two division champions against one another.

Prior to the 2006 season, with the comings and goings of conference realignment, the conference returned to a single division format, but kept the championship series until 2009.

For three years there was no championship series, but the West Coast Conference re-established a conference tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. last year. The San Diego Toreros won the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, defeating San Francisco, 2-0, in the finale.

But this year neither team  may make the four-squad face-off. San Francisco has already been eliminated with an 11-16 mark and San Diego sits 2.5 games back of first place Pepperdine. The Toreros have already finished their regular-season schedule with a 34-20 record and currently sit in fourth place with a 16-11 mark in conference.

Will that be enough to garner the Toreros a trip to Northern California next weekend? This weekend, San Diego will watch W.tv as three big series determine the outcome of the conference race and who will battle for the title next weekend:

Pepperdine (17-7) at Gonzaga (15-9)

Loyola Marymount (15-9) at Pacific (14-10)

St. Mary’s (eliminated) at Santa Clara (14-10)
