SoCal Roundup: Finding a Way

A number of Southern California squads had obstacles to overcome on Friday, but some were able to find a way to win, which is the name of the game once you get to this point in the season.

San Diego had a pair of heavily offensive innings, but was it enough on the road at San Francisco? UCLA and Arizona State’s aces struggled out of the gate, but one got better and led his team to victory. Find out who survived the battle.

UC Santa Barbara and San Diego State had their offenses get shut down, but one team was able to find a way to win. And Cal State Fullerton was on the road at Wichita State and without offensive leader Matt Chapman. Could the Titans get Thomas Eshelman enough offensive support?

All of that plus more in a roundup of all of Friday’s Southern California college baseball action with photo galleries from Cal State Northridge/Long Beach State and ASU/UCLA:

SoCal Roundup: Retribution Walk-Offs

While midweek games in other parts of the country often feature teams better suited for sticky flyers handed out late at night outside bars, midweek games in Southern California are always an opportunity for matchups worthy of being plastered on billboards and marquees.

This week featured three top notch marquee matchups with low-scoring, strong-pitching UCLA and UC Irvine playing, the WCC and Big West favorites facing off when San Diego hosted No. 8 Cal State Fullerton and a pair of upstarts in the two conferences battling each other when Pepperdine travelled up to UC Santa Barbara.

Both of the featured Big West/WCC matchups had a late opportunity for redemption that was cashed in. A roundup of all those games  and the rest of the SoCal squads in action with photo galleries from UCLA and Northridge:

SoCal Roundup: Doing It Both Ways

It is rare that a two-way player can dominate both on the mound and with the bat, but on Sunday, a pair of lefty SoCal studs did just that. Louie Lechich and Aaron Brown lifted their teams to shutout wins to cap off impressive weekends for a pair of West Coast Conference contenders.

At Dedeaux Field, crosstown rivals USC and UCLA squared off in front of a packed house for a dramatic back-and-forth contest that included a blown save from All-American David Berg, but who came out on top?

CBD Visit: Aaron Brown Complete Game Helps Waves Salvage Win

Aaron Brown had his first complete game.MALIBU, Calif. — Pepperdine senior outfielder Chris Amezquita knows how tough it can be to hit a ball out to dead centerfield at Eddy D. Field Stadium. He is the Waves’ top home run hitter, but has seen a number of drives to centerfield quickly run out of steam.

That wasn’t the case on Sunday as Amezquita powered a low-and-away slider over the fence for a three-run homer to help Pepperdine (21-17, 9-6) snap Gonzaga’s 11-game winning streak with a 10-5 victory to keep from being swept by the Bulldogs (26-11-1, 13-5).

Drew Hacker had two hits and four RBI and Ranny Lowe had a pair of RBI infield singles in support of southpaw Aaron Brown, who pitched his first career complete game. Gonzaga was able to manufacture single runs in the first three innings, but Brown settled into a groove in the middle innings. He allowed six hits and only two earned runs as he won his fifth consecutive decision.
