2014 Oxford Regional: Day 2 Recap

OXFORD, Miss. – Matt Gonzalez broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning as No. 25 Georgia Tech rallied to stave off elimination Sunday with a 4-2 win over Jacksonville State in the NCAA Oxford Regional.

The Yellow Jackets (37-26) will play again Sunday versus the loser of a game between Washington and Ole Miss that was set for a 4 p.m. ET first pitch. The late game at Ole Miss’s Swayze Field will begin at approximately 8 p.m. ET on ESPN3. Continue reading

Ole Miss 41-18

After being picked 6th in the SEC West in pre-season polls, the Rebels exceeded all expectations, winning the division with a 19-11 record and being in the discussion of a national seed. Their hopes of being one of the top eight fell short, but Ole Miss is hosting a regional and have a team that’s very reliable on both sides of the ball. Despite a very strong pitching staff featuring Chris Ellis (2.17 ERA) and Christian Trent (2.44 ERA) who combined to go 15-1 on the season, what the Rebels do offensively is what is so impressive. Finish: No postseason

To put it bluntly, the Boston College Eagles were out of their element in ACC conference play in 2013. The Eagles lost their first 20 conference games before surprisingly winning a home series with Miami to get off the schnide.

Georgia Tech releases 2014 Schedule

DannyHallGT.jpgTHE FLATS – The Georgia Tech baseball team has released its 2014 schedule, highlighted by 35 home games, three games versus rival Georgia, match ups with eight teams that reached the NCAA Regionals in 2013 and a late-season series versus USF.

The Yellow Jackets’ 56-game slate begins Friday, February 14 versus Old Dominion in the Georgia Tech Invitational at 4 p.m. Tech also welcomes VCU and Radford for the opening-weekend tournament that will be played in a round-robin format. It is the first time the Yellow Jackets have hosted an in-season tournament. Continue reading

VanderbiltHuddleFeaturedNASHVILLE, Tenn. – Philip Pfeifer tossed five shutout innings and Xavier Turner drove in three runs, leading Vanderbilt to a 7-1 victory over Georgia Tech and a berth into the NCAA Super Regionals Monday night at Hawkins Field.

Vanderbilt (54-10), the No. 2 national seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, advances to take on Louisville next weekend at home. Game dates and times will be announced later Monday night at the conclusion of all of the weekend regional action. Continue reading

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Georgia Tech rallied from a run down in the ninth, scoring four times as the Yellow Jackets stayed alive in the Nashville Regional with a 6-3 win over Illinois Sunday afternoon. Junior first-team All-ACC catcher and Golden Spikes Award semifinalist Zane Evans had three hits, two RBI and got the win with three innings of relief. Continue reading

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior RHP Buck Farmer was in complete command of East Tennessee State, but it was a nearly two hour lightning delay in the seventh inning that knocked him from the game as Georgia Tech staved off elimination Saturday at Hawkins Field with a 5-1 win over the Buccaneers in the Nashville Regional.

The second-seeded Yellow Jackets built a 5-0 lead for Farmer when the inclement weather moved in, and Jonathan Roberts fired three effective innings after the break to finish off the victory and keep his team alive. Continue reading
