CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Matt Browning, James Madison Jr., OF, Mystic, Conn./Fitch
Browning batted .647 (11-17) with three doubles, a homer, seven runs scored and four RBI in JMU’s five games last week. The junior outfielder had at least two hits in four of the five games and had a 1.000 slugging percentage. For the season, Browning is hitting .368 with 13 RBI. Ten of the eleven CAA teams were in action this weekend in non- conference games. Here’s a quick run down of each team.
-George Mason started the year 4-0 for just the third time in school history. The Patriots competed in the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. Righty Kevin Crum (1-0 0.00) and second baseman Ryan Soares (.500-1-4) were named the all-tournament team.
For the first time since 2004, the Colonial Athletic Association sent two teams (James Madison and UNC Wilmington) to the NCAA tournament. The Georgia State baseball team added three student-athletes who signed a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period, head coach Greg Frady announced Thursday. The trio includes a pair of pitchers and a catcher who will play for the Panthers starting with the 2010 season.
“Overall, I am very happy with our signing class,” commented Head Coach Greg Frady. “We really wanted to bring in some quality, difference makers and I feel that we have done that. Highlighted by home match-ups against two of their biggest rivals and coming off a school record 33-win season, the Georgia State baseball team announced its upcoming 2009 schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The journey back to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament begins with a four-game home series against Cleveland State on Friday, February 20th.
