USA Baseball Announces 30 Semifinalists for 2011 Golden Spikes Award

USD Tournament Scouting Report and Review

I was able to attend four games this weekend at the USD Tournament, held at Tony Gwynn Stadium at San Diego State.  I got to see Oklahoma, Cal, UCONN, and San Diego State all in action twice.  Here’s some news and notes on some key players from each team, including George Springer, Matt Barnes, Garrett Buechele, Tony Renda, Brandon Meredith, Brad Haynal, and more, with video included. Foley’s National Weekend Preview (March 4th-6th)

We enter the third weekend of action in College Baseball today with a couple of good tournaments and series around the country. Sr. Writer William Knox will be in Austin TX this weekend covering the Stanford vs Texas series while Assistant Editor Mark Rafferty is flying down to San Diego to cover the University of San Diego tournament. Both Sr. Writer Katherine Cornetta and Editor Brian Foley will be in the CBD East Coast office running the twitter and answering questions on twitter. Top 100 Countdown: 3. George Springer (UConn)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today at number 3 in our countdown with UConn junior centerfielder George Springer. The New Britain, Connecticut, native attended Avon Old Farms all four years of high school. He had an outstanding career being named All-New England in 2007 and 2008 while participating in the Cape Cod High School Classic in 2007. Team USA falls 4-3 in extra innings to Cuba

Tokyo, Japan – Alfredo Despaigne hit two home runs including a walk-off three-run home run in the 10th inning to give Cuba a 4-3 win over USA in the gold medal game Saturday night at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Meiji Jingu Stadium.

Team USA defeats Japan to advance to FISU Championship Game

GeorgeSpringerUConn Tokyo, Japan – Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt) scattered three hits over seven innings and George Springer (Connecticut) hit a grand slam as USA defeated host team Japan 4-2 in semi-final action at the V FISU World University Baseball Championships inside Yokohama Stadium Thursday night. With the win, USA (16-2) will make its fourth-straight appearance in the FISU gold medal game when they square off against Cuba on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 5 a.m. (EST).

Team USA Advances to Semifinals with 11-0 Victory over China

RyanWrightLouisville Tokyo, Japan – Team USA scored a combined 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to an 11-0, seven inning quarterfinal win over China Tuesday afternoon at the V FISU World University Championships inside Yokohama Stadium. With the win, USA (15-2) advances to the semi-finals and will play the winner of Chinese Taipei/Japan on Thursday with a scheduled start time yet to be determined.

Team USA defeats Chinese Taipei in Extra Innings

NickRamirezCalStateFullerton Tokyo, Japan – Nick Ramirez’ (Cal State Fullerton) single in the 11th inning scored Ryan Wright (Louisville) from second base giving USA a thrilling 8-7 win over Chinese Taipei in pool play Sunday night at Meiji Jingu Stadium.

The game took two tie-break extra-innings to produce a winner, where both squads scored a run in the 10th before USA won the game in the bottom of the 11th. The International Baseball Federation’s (IBAF) tie-break rule, which was implanted in July of 2008, starts in the 10th stanza and each inning needed thereafter, base runners are placed on first and second with no outs.

2011 MLB Draft: Seattle eyeing Rice’s Anthony Rendon

AnthonyRendonRice The Seattle Mariners fans are already looking forward to the 2011 MLB Draft as they are currently one game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the loss column and 5.5 games behind Baltimore for the worst record in the league. Larry Stone of the Seattle Times recently took a look at some of the best prospects for the 2011 MLB Draft and the consensus a couple of weeks ago was that Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon was the clear cut number 1 pick. (Full Player Profile on Rendon available here) Rendon went down injured on July 14th with multiple fractures in his right ankle which was his second straight year of having a major right ankle injury.
