Matt Marquis (University of Maryland/Silver-Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts) raced home on a wild pitch to cap a wild finish at Estadio Municipal Jesus Maria Freire in Cidra, Puerto Rico, giving the traveling Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League All-Stars a 3-2 win over the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) on Wednesday night.
After falling behind early, 2-0, the Ripken Leaguers got a double from Matt Marquis (University of Maryland/Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts) in the fourth inning and a painful RBI-hit-by-pitch from Cory Jensen (Florida Southern University/Baltimore Redbirds). Meanwhile, starter Cameron Love (University of San Francisco/Bethesda Big Train) struck out ten batters in four innings before giving way to Dustin Herbert (Salisbury University/Southern Maryland Nationals), who struck out seven more in four innings of his own.
We continue the list today with number 90 in our countdown with Florida Southern junior RHP Daniel Tillman. He is a 6’1 195 pound righhander from Live Oak, Florida and Suwannee High School. He was a third-team all-state selection in his junior and senior season.
The Royals were led by 1B Dan Smith of Lake Monmorah, Australia. He was 2-5 with a home run and two RBI. DH Jason Griffin also hit a two-run home run for the Royals. Baseball America has put together previews of Division 2 and Division 3. They have Tampa as the best team in the country for Division 2. The Spartans are seeking their third title in the last four years. UC San Diego is listed as the second best team while Mount Olive who was the 2008 Division 2 champion are ranked third by Baseball America. Central Missouri and Florida Southern round out the Top 5. Baseball America has put Robbie Shields of Florida Southern as the top position player while Mike Adams of Franklin Pierce is the top pitcher.
