SBC Johnny Bench Award Watch List: Aramis Garcia

AramisGarcia90The Sun Belt Conference features three catchers on the initial watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the top catcher in Division 1 college baseball.

Coming out of high school, Aramis Garcia was a special prospect.

2013 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll and Teams

sunbelt_thumb.jpgNEW ORLEANS – The Florida Atlantic Owls have been tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the 2013 Sun Belt Conference baseball title, the league announced on Monday.

FAU won the SBC regular season title in 2012 behind a 32-22 overall record and a 19-8 record in SBC play. This season, the Owls return six starters from that squad and four starting pitchers, including 2013 All-SBC Preseason selections pitcher Austin Gomber and first baseman Mark Nelson. FIU releases 2013 Schedule

FIU_ATH_logo(282-125spot)MIAMI (Jan. 15, 2013) – The 2013 FIU baseball schedule, comprised of 18 teams and featuring 37 home games, was released on Tuesday. Coupled with a very competitive Sun Belt Conference slate, the Panthers will face five out-of-conference opponents which punched a ticket to the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

FIU will start its season with a three-game series at home against one of the best stories across the college landscape last year in Stony Brook on Feb. 15. The Seawolves took their American East Conference championship and turned it into a trip to the College World Series before being eliminated by Florida State. NCBWA releases National Players of the Week

FROM NCBWA RELEASEMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 13, today. FIU senior outfielder Pablo Bermudez was named National Hitter of the Week, while Texas A&M senior right-hander Ross Stripling was named National Pitcher of the Week. Wittels Career Nearly Derailed over Rape Charges

Before last season, I was one of the strongest critics of Florida International allowing Garrett Wittels to play during the 2011 season with rape charges pending. The charges ended up being dropped and Wittels lost his hitting streak on the first day of the season and went back into obscurity. ESPN.com recently caught up with Wittels who is now in the St. Louis Cardinals system to discuss the charges and the challenges he has faced. Read the rest of this entry »

2012 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

NEW ORLEANS – The Panthers of FIU and the Trojans of Troy have been tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the 2012 Sun Belt Conference baseball title in a vote of the league’s head coaches.

FIU, which finished second overall in the standings in 2011, returns five starters to an offense that led the SBC in batting average, home runs and runs scored. The Panthers finished last season 20-9-1 in conference play. FIU received four first-place votes from the coaches and finished with 93 points. Read the rest of this entry »

Darkness forced the suspension of Game Two in the Keaney-Navy World Series on Friday evening, but when play resumed on Saturday, sophomore Joe Landi scored on redshirt junior Pat Fortunato’s single up the middle to give Keaney the 3-2 win, as well as its fifth consecutive KNWS title. FIU Hires Drew French as New Pitching Coach

MIAMI – After spending the past four years at the University of Alabama, Drew French has been hired as FIU baseball’s newest pitching coach, announced on Wednesday by Head Coach Turtle Thomas.

“We’re very happy and pleased to have hired a great young assistant pitching coach in Drew French,” Thomas said of his new hire. “He comes very highly recommended from many great current and former college baseball coaches.
