BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior Corey Keller took his turn at leading No. 23 Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team to a thrilling 6-5 victory over Towson to advance at the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The two teams exchanged the lead three times and were tied twice. Geoff Jimenez was hit by a pitch to start the ninth inning, with the score tied at five. He stole second and moved to third on a deep fly to center field by senior first baseman Mark Nelson. Towson elected to walk Brendon Sanger to get to Keller, who had a homerun earlier in the day. Keller belted a double to left to score the game-winning run. On the day, Keller was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Continue reading
BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team, ranked No. 23 nationally by Baseball America, used the strong arm Austin Gomber, who moved to 8-4 on the season, and the hot bats of seniors Nathan Pittman and Corey Keller to defeat Canisius 14-6 in Saturday’s elimination game of the Chapel Hill NCAA Tournament. The victory improved FAU’s record to 40-21 on the season, the fourth time in 10 seasons and the first under the direction of Head Coach John McCormack that the Owls have posted at least 40 wins. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior righthander Mike Volpe earned his tenth victory of the season and senior catcher Andrew Parker blasted a monstrous three-run homer as the Tigers (30-28) continued their magical post-season with a 7-2 victory over No. 23 Florida Atlantic (39-21) in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament at Boshamer Stadium on Friday afternoon. The (1) North Carolina Tar Heels will host their double-elimination regional on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium starting on Friday, May 31st and ending on either June 2nd or June 3rd if necessary. Joining the Tar Heels will be (2) Florida Atlantic, (3) Towson, and (4) Canisius who will make for some formidable match-ups at Chapel Hill. The winner of this regional will play the winner of the Columbia (SC) regional hosted by (1) South Carolina with (2) Clemson, (3) Liberty, and (4) St. Louis. NEW ORLEANS – The Panthers of FIU and the Trojans of Troy have been tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the 2012 Sun Belt Conference baseball title in a vote of the league’s head coaches.
FIU, which finished second overall in the standings in 2011, returns five starters to an offense that led the SBC in batting average, home runs and runs scored. The Panthers finished last season 20-9-1 in conference play. FIU received four first-place votes from the coaches and finished with 93 points. Continue reading

Junior Daniel Pigott (Ormond Beach, Fla.) delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning that scored sophomore Nolan Fontana (Winter Springs, Fla.) with the winning run as No. 1 Florida (15-2) edged No. 4 Florida State (15-2), 5-4, on Tuesday night in front of a record crowd of 5,930 fans at McKethan Stadium. The Seminoles used a four-run third to grab the lead but were held scoreless for the final seven innings of the contest. NEW ORLEANS – Following one of the most successful seasons in Sun Belt Conference baseball history the SBC baseball coaches decided to implement a new tournament format for the upcoming 2011 SBC Baseball Championship.
The new round-robin format, which is similar in scope to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, will feature eight of the ten SBC teams competing against each other in two four-team pools with the team with the best record in each pool advancing to the tournament’s championship game.
