Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Day 1 Recap

Here is your Day 1 Recap from the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Game 1: Indiana State 4 Creighton 3

NORMAL, Ill. – In game one of the 2013 MVC Baseball Championship, No. 6 Indiana State took down No. 3 Creighton, 4-3 from Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill. The Sycamores will face the winner of the Wichita State/Southern Illinois contest, while the Bluejays will take on the non-winner of the Shockers/Salukis game.

Junior Sean Manaea was set to start the game for Indiana State, but was lifted from the game after feeling tightness in his left shoulder when throwing warmup pitches in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Josh Negele (3-1) went on the start the game for the Sycamores, tossing a career-high 5.1 innings while allowing seven hits and one run with four strikeouts. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Valley Conference Recap April 5th-7th

An exciting weekend of Missouri Valley conference play is in the books as each series saw it’s teams square off in closely contested match-ups. Perhaps the most exciting was Missouri State and Illinois State’s Friday night opener, in which starters Nick Petree and Chris Razo exchanged strike-outs down the stretch before Petree was ultimately handed his first loss of the season. Perhaps the most controversial was Creighton’s opening game win over Bradley which saw a critical play at the plate, and a not completely unexpected ejection thereafter. Southern Illinois and Evansville saw their own pitchers’ duel on Friday night as starters Kyle Freeland and Cody Forsythe both went nine innings in a finish that would need extras to decide it. Meanwhile, Indiana State rescued a sweep at the hands of Wichita State after Sean Manaea, who was scratched from his Friday start, was able to pick up the win on Sunday. Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (March 22nd-24th)

The start of Missouri Valley Conference play was marked as it always seems to be: with a winter snow storm. All the teams in the Valley rushed to finish their series before Sunday (with the notable exception of Wichita State who had the fortune of playing in Hawaii—and ironically had Sunday’s game rained out). In the first weekend of conference play, Creighton took two of three on the road at Evansville, while Indiana State proved they will be a tough team to beat this season by taking all three from visiting Southern Illinois. Out of conference, Illinois State dropped their series to Eastern Illinois, Bradley lost their two games against Dartmouth in Florida, and although their basketball team is on a tear this March, the Wichita State baseball team struggled through their road series at Hawaii, picking up just one win in their four game series. Evansville releases 2013 Schedule

The fourth player on our Top 100 countdown is Evansville’s Kyle Freeland. The 6’3 Denver, Colorado native broke out as a key player to watch in 2013 after a fantastic summer playing in the Alaska Baseball League.

2012 CBD Season Preview: Missouri Valley Conference

In June of 2011, perennial baseball power Dallas Baptist University was granted a provisional season with the Missouri Valley Conference. In essence a year-long test run, the MVC was then planning to vote on DBU’s membership after the duration of the season in May of 2012. While the movement to bring DBU—who made it all the way to the Super-Regionals last season before falling to Cal—was seen as an effort to boost the MVC’s power ranking, it was also met by skepticism from some MVC teams citing travel time and costs as concerns. As a result, the Patriots were offered the provisional membership rather than acceptance in to the conference. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 CCBL All-Star Game Recap: East Division defeats West 4-1

The Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star is usually a showcase for the best college baseball talent in the country and this year was more of the same.

Taylor Rogers (Kentucky) picked up the win as he gave up a first inning run as Travis Jankowski (Stony Brook) scored the opening run of the game on a Eric Stamets (Evansville) bunt single. The throw to third base from first baseman Ben Waldrip (Jacksonville State) fly into the stands allowing Jankowski to score from second base. Breaking down the CCBL All-Star Game by Conference/Teams

Since the Cape Cod Baseball League announced their 2011 All-Star Game rosters on Friday, lets take a look at what conferences and college programs have had the most success this summer. The leading conference this year is the Pac-10 conference which features eight players from seven different school. Coming in second place is the SEC which has six players from four different schools. Interesting enough, the ACC and Big East conference both have four players in the game this year which speaks to how strong the the Big East over the last couple of seasons. 2011 CBD Missouri Valley Conference Awards

2011 College Baseball Daily MVC Player of the Year – Chris O’Brien, Wichita State

Chris O’Brien of Wichita State is 2011 CBD Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. The junior catcher from Tulsa, OK, absolutely knocked the cover off the ball in his first full season of duty, hitting .410, tallying 100 hits and 25 doubles, while managing a .495 on-base-percentage—all league bests. His 100 hits were also good for second-most in the nation. O’Brien placed in to the top 3 in the Valley in homeruns (10), RBI (70), and runs scored (56). O’Brien, who hit above .500 for the majority of conference-play, also led the conference with 31 multi-hit games and finishes the season on a career-best 29-game hitting streak. He is a finalist for both the Johnny Bench (best collegiate catcher) and Dick Howser (top collegiate player as voted on by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) awards.
