NCBWA Releases 2011 Stopper of the Year Watch List

Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Tuesday.

#24 South Carolina 15 Presbyterian 0

COLUMBIA, SC – Scott Wingo and Whit Merrifield each homered and Gamecock starter Nolan Belcher combined with four relievers for a two-hit shutout as 15th ranked South Carolina defeated Presbyterian 15-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks are now 5-2 on the year while the loss drops Presbyterian to 1-7 for the season. South Carolina returns to action with a three-game series vs. nationally ranked Clemson. The series begins on Friday at Clemson with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s tilt will be at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. and is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the finale at Carolina Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. as well.

Belcher was dominant on the hill for the Gamecocks with five scoreless innings and just one infield hit allowed. He struck out seven and walked one to earn his first win of the year. Matt Price also struck out one in one inning of relief with Parker Bangs striking out two batters in his stint. Freshmen Ethan Carter and Colby Holmes closed the game out with an inning apiece as well. South Carolina pitchers had 10 strikeouts to two walks on the afternoon. Presbyterian reliever Jesse Harmon went 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits to suffer the loss. He is 0-1 on the year.

2010 Preseason Ohio Valley Conference Poll and Team

OhioValleyConference_100 BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Fresh off the 2009 OVC Regular Season Championship, Eastern Illinois has been picked as the 2010 preseason favorite for the nine-team league in a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches. In additional voting, Morehead State senior shortstop Drew Lee and Eastern Kentucky junior third baseman Jayson Langfels were named OVC Preseason Co-Players of the Year while Murray State senior Chris Craycraft and Eastern Illinois junior Josh Mueller were tabbed OVC Preseason Co-Pitchers of the Year.

Eastern Kentucky hammers Kentucky State 49-1

Eastern Kentucky picked up a victory over Kentucky State on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 49-1. Eastern Kentucky is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference while Kentucky State is a member of Division 2 where they are struggling with a 2-16 record. Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll and Teams

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — For the second year in a row, Jacksonville State has been picked as the preseason favorite for the nine-team league in a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches. The Gamecocks claimed the 2008 regular season championship with a 23-4 record last season but came up just short in the OVC Tournament. Eastern Kentucky 2009 Schedule Set

Eastern Kentucky head coach Jason Stein has released the 2009 baseball schedule for the Colonels. The Colonels will be trying to improve off a 2008 campaign that saw them finish the season with an overall record of 27-28-1, including a 12-15 record in Ohio Valley Conference play. Jason Stein Named Head Baseball Coach at Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – Former Eastern Kentucky University infielder Jason Stein was named the school’s new baseball coach, EKU Director of Athletics Mark Sandy announced on Thursday.

A two-time All-OVC honoree for Athletics Hall of Fame coach Jim Ward from 1992-95, Stein later served as an assistant coach to Ward from 1998-2000. Stein comes to Richmond from Belmont University where he served seven years as an assistant coach, the last two as assistant head coach.

“To be able to return to my alma mater and coach on the field where I bled and cried as a player is unbelievable,” Stein said. “Every young coach wants the opportunity to take over a program with a history of excellence and winning championships. To inherit such a program to which I already have strong emotional ties is a dream come true.”

Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. Western Michigan entered the game having scored at least 15 runs in three of its last five games, but McDonald kept the Bronco bats silent all afternoon. Jacksonville State picked to win OVC

NASHVILLE – In a vote of Ohio Valley Conference head baseball coaches, Jacksonville State was picked as the 2008 preseason favorite in the 10-team league. The Gamecocks finished second in both the regular season and tournament last season. In additional voting, JSU senior outfielder Clay Whittemore was picked as the Preseason Player of the Year while Eastern Kentucky junior left-handed pitcher Christian Friedrich was named the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
