2011 NCAA Regional Preview: Charlottesville

By: Greg Waters
Several interesting story lines mark the 2011 Charlottesville Regional. St John’s is returning to Charlottesville where they almost pulled the upset last season forcing the 5th overall national seed Virginia to an elimination game. The ECU Pirates return to Charlottesville where they played the Cavaliers tough in a three game series the second week of the season, losing the three game set 2-1, including a one-run loss on Saturday. Navy will be making its first appearance in Charlottesville since a 17-1 loss back in March of 2009. This will be Virginia’s fifth time hosting an NCAA Regional since 2004. 2011 CUSA Player of the Year – Chad Zurcher, Memphis

In a year when offensive numbers across the country plummeted—and the name “BBCOR” became commonly uttered next to any manner of expletive—Memphis’ Chad Zurcher didn’t seem to get the memo. The junior from Knoxville finished the season with an NCAA-best .443 batting average, and his .455 average to finish the regular season was eight points higher than the CUSA single-season record set by UCF’s Chris Duffy in 2010. Zurcher was a large reason that Memphis finished the season with the best team batting average in the conference, as he led the league in multi-hit games (28). As well, Zurcher displayed an uncanny knack for getting on base as his 33 walks to just 17 strikeouts added up to a league-best (and nation-best) .547 on-base-percentage. #17 Rice and #20 Southern Miss have finished the 2011 regular season as CUSA co-champions—the first time in Conference USA’s 16 year history that two teams will share the regular season title. With their series victory of the Golden Eagles this past weekend, the Rice Owls lengthened their streak of consecutive titles to 16 years, and earned the No.1 seed in this week’s CUSA Championship Tournament to be played in Pearl, MS. While the odds of Rice and Southern Miss (the No. 2 seed) receiving at-large bids to the NCAA tournament are high, for the other six teams in the field, a tournament championship is the only guarantee they’ll have for extending their season. Conference USA Weekend Recap (May 19th-21st)

By: John Lockwood

The Rice Owls and Southern Miss Golden Eagles are Conference USA Regular Season co-Champions for 2011. #17 Rice stormed into Hattiesburg, MS this weekend and took two of three from #20 Southern Miss to take a share of the league title in advance of the upcoming CUSA Championship Tournament to start Tuesday in Pearl, MS. It was the first time in Conference USA’s 16-year history that regular season co-champions have been crowned, and while it was the second consecutive regular season title for the Owls, it was the first for the Golden Eagles since 2003. Elsewhere in conference play, #30 ECU swept Tulane to secure the #3 spot in the CUSA tournament, Memphis took two of three from visiting Houston and UCF took two of three from Marshall. UAB split two games on the road against Utah to finish their regular season schedule. The Conference Tournament starts Wednesday morning at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS. Conference USA Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

By: John Lockwood

Although the field is set for the 2011 Conference USA tournament to be held in Pearl, MS in two weeks, the battle for the CUSA regular season championship will be decided 80 miles down US-49 in Hattiesburg as the second-place Rice Owls take on first-place Southern Miss. Rice comes into this weekend one game behind the Golden Eagles in the standings, but both teams are guaranteed the top two seeds come May 25th. Spots three through seven are wide open however, as East Carolina and Houston both share 11-10 records while Tulane, UCF and Memphis all come in to the weekend at 10-11. UAB, who finished up their conference schedule last weekend by being swept by UCF, has the unfortunate distinction of playing the #1 seed in the 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark. Marshall, after losing their series to Tulane, is the odd-man out. Nationally, although they are in second-place in CUSA, Rice climbs two spots this week to #17, while their first-place opponent this weekend drops to #20 after dropping their series on the road at Houston. Back in the top 30 as well is East Carolina, at #30, after going a perfect 4-0 last weekend. Continue reading Conference USA Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

Conference USA Weekend Recap (May 13th-15th)

By: John Lockwood

Several key series unfolded this weekend as Conference USA finished up its second to last weekend of conference play this season. Houston stole two from visiting Southern Miss, leaving the Golden Eagles with just a one-game lead in the conference standings at a 15-6 record. Right behind them is Rice, who, with their series victory over visiting Memphis, improved to 14-7 in conference play. UCF solidified their spot in the Conference USA tournament, jumping up to a tie for fifth place after sweeping UAB in Birmingham over the weekend. Tied with UCF (as well as with Memphis) is Tulane, who were able to scrape together two wins in West Virginia, as they played an unconventionally scheduled three game set against Marshall. ECU absolutely destroyed visiting Delaware State, taking all three from the MEAC team by an average margin of just over eleven runs per game.
