Last week was another strong one for us, as we defeated Middle Tennessee State in the midweek, 9-1, and won all three games against Alabama. Curt Casali, the SEC Player of the Week, was 6-14 with a home run and 10 runs batted in during those four games. Anthony Gomez continued his hit streak this week, pushing the total to 28 games and counting. Tony Kemp made the catch of the year in college baseball on Sunday. Down 10-6 in the top of the 8th inning, Alabama was rallying and had the bases loaded with two outs. The next ball was lined down the left field line, and Tony dove/jumped/flew in the air as he landed on the warning track with the ball in his glove. It was definitely Web Gem/Sportscenter Top 10 worthy, but the camera angle didn’t help his case. (VIDEO LINK).  Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (April 12th)

After starting the week with a 10-3 victory over UT-Martin, we packed the charter bus on Thursday and headed to The Plains of Auburn, Alabama for a three-game series. Each of the games was close until the later innings, when we were able to string together some clutch hitting to distance ourselves from the Tigers and win all three games. After starting the week with an 11-2 victory over Tennessee Tech, we traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas for our conference series with the Razorbacks. We finished on the wrong end of a pitcher’s duel Friday night, as Arkansas scored two runs in the eighth inning to win 2-1. Yet we were able to come back and take the series, winning Saturday 4-1 and 2-1 on Sunday. Saturday’s victory came after eight strong innings on the bump by Grayson Garvin. Garv allowed one run on two hits and two walks, and struck out six batters. On Sunday, starter Taylor Hill combined with four relievers to help us clinch the series. One of the two runs Sunday came courtesy of Aaron Westlake’s fourth home run of the season, and I’m pretty sure if the Arkansas scoreboard hadn’t stopped it someone would have found it in Oklahoma. We were pretty successful this week, finishing the week 3-1 with a victory over Purdue and two over Mississippi State. Even though we won the first two games of the series against Mississippi State, they battled back and beat us 9-8 on Sunday. For the first three games of the week, our pitching was dominant and threw shutouts in each game. Kevin Ziomek began the streak with his start against Purdue, and it continued through Sonny Gray’s start Friday and Grayson Garvin’s on Saturday. Tony Kemp and Anthony Gomez, the two hitters atop our lineup, led us offensively this week. Kemp pushed his hitting streak to five games, whereas Gomez’s streak is at 16 and counting. First things first—a huge thanks goes out to Anthony Gomez for writing last week’s blog for me. I came down with a little case of Spring Break Senioritis (watch out, its contagious), and from some of the feedback we received, he about put me out of a job. However, I think I’ll be able to make it through the rest of the season. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (March 15th)

This week is Spring Break at Vandy, so I figured there is no better time to have a guest blogger—and somehow, Anthony Gomez talked me into letting him do it. “Go-Go” Gomez is a sophomore infielder from Nutley, New Jersey. Even though he is one of my best friends, I still feel the need to apologize for whatever Jersey Shore fist-pumping he may put into it. At the very least, his blog will be full of swag, because no one has more of it than Ant. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (March 8th)

Anyone who was able to make it to Hawkins Field last weekend was greeted with three great college baseball games. The atmosphere on Saturday was phenomenal, and compares very favorably to a NCAA Regional site. The Stanford Cardinal are a very talented baseball team, and have a great chance of making the College World Series at the end of the year. Kenny Diekroeger and Stephen Piscotty are as good of a left side of the infield as there is in college baseball this year, and they are very well coached. There are times in the off-season when baseball players become frustrated with the long workouts and conditioning because the season seems so far away. Yet when we lace up our cleats and step on the field on opening day, we remember the reason we endure the long winters. All of the determination and effort pays off by knowing we are prepared to succeed throughout the season. Last Friday in San Diego, my teammates and I shared this feeling, and we couldn’t have been more excited to begin the season. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (Feb. 22nd)

Hey everyone, hope your week has started off well. We are only a few days from the season’s first pitch in (hopefully) sunny San Diego, California. We had three final scrimmages this weekend, and everyone is ready to finally face a different team on Friday. We play three games against the San Diego Toreros and one against the San Diego State Aztecs. We have a great opportunity to open our season against two very talented teams, and I’m sure all four games will come down to the end. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (Feb. 15th)

Hey everyone, hope you are having a good start to the week. I should have known that once I wrote about the great weather that I would jinx it. The weather in Nashville was cold, rainy, and gloomy all week. It is more difficult to workout when the weather is cold or wet because the baseball becomes slick and because the rain may affect our vision. However, we play in bad weather, so we workout in bad weather too. We have a saying that “it is always 70 (degrees) and sunny at Hawkins Field,” because if we have the right mindset, the weather will not affect us.
