Franklin Pierce Unanimous Top Choice in NCBWA Northeast Preseason Poll

RINDGE, N.H. (February 4, 2008) – Franklin Pierce University is the unanimous top choice in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America’s (NCBWA) Division II Northeast Regional preseason poll. Franklin Pierce, the defending Northeast Region and Northeast-10 regular season and tournament champions, received all nine first place votes by the committee. East Coast Conference regular season and tournament champion Adelphi University was picked second with 73 points. Northeast region and NE-10 Tournament runners-up Bryant University is third, followed by the University of Massachusetts Lowell in fourth and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champions Caldwell College rounds out the top five. Ouachita Baptist rally to defeat Drury!

ARKADELPHIA – Chandler Boyce had his first collegiate home run as the third-ranked Ouachita Baptist baseball team rallied to defeat Drury, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Rab Rodgers Field.

The Panthers (2-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Tigers starter Zach Wilbanks and took a 3-0 advantage into the bottom of the third.

Blake Lockwood, who reached on a two-out error, scored on Boyce’s homer over the center field wall to cut the Drury deficit to 3-2. The Panthers added a run in the fourth, but Ouachita Baptist (6-0) exploded with three in the bottom half of the inning.

Ouachita Baptist routs Upper Iowa 28-7!

JoeDan Poulter belted a pair of home runs and Rudy Jovanovski drove in four as the third-ranked Ouachita Baptist baseball team set a school record for runs scored as the Tigers pounded Upper Iowa , 28-7, Saturday afternoon at Rab Rodgers Field.

Ouachita Baptist (5-0) raced out to a 6-0 lead after one inning and added eight in the second to take a 14-0 margin into the top of the third. Upper Iowa added a pair on the third, but the Tigers countered with a run in the bottom of the third and four in the fourth to put the game away.

Chris Dinges’ home runs propels St Edwards Hilltoppers past Newman!

AUSTIN, Texas Center fielder Chris Dinges hit three home runs to help the Hilltoppers slug their way past Newman, 16-7, Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

St. Edward’s (3-3, 3-0 HC) got off to a fast start against Newman (0-3, 0-3 HC). The Hilltoppers tallied six runs on seven hits in the first inning. Left fielder Bradley Goldsmith led off the game with a solo home run to left field. Right Fielder Mike Hancock added a two-run single and first baseman Dexter Moreno knocked an RBI double to right center field. Catcher Adam Wolotira and shortstop Anthony Spagnolo also collected RBI hits in the inning.

St Edwards Hilltoppers earn first wins of season

AUSTIN, TexasSt. Edward’s opened up Heartland Conference play sweeping two games from Newman Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 6-2, and won the second contest, 8-4.

In game one, St. Edward’s (2-3, 2-0 HC) jumped out to an early lead against Newman (0-2, 0-2 HC). The Hilltoppers got on the board in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Center fielder Chris Dinges started off the inning with an infield single. After catcher Stephen McClanahan drew a walk, shortstop Anthony Spagnolo launched a three-run home run to left field. The Toppers tacked on another run in the inning when second baseman Drew Cross singled in left fielder Bradley Goldsmith.

Ouachita Baptist uses four run 7th to beat upper Iowa!!

ARKADELPHIA – The third-ranked Ouachita Baptist baseball team exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Upper Iowa, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Rab Rodgers Field during the Tigers’ home opener.

Ouachita Baptist (4-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Rudy Jovanovski solo home run to left, but that was about all the offense the Tigers could muster off Peacocks starter Zach Raff.

Upper Iowa (0-1) tied the contest in the sixth on a solo homer by TJ Johnson and took a 2-1 lead in the seventh.

A leadoff home run by Destan Makonnen tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the seventh, followed by a one-out walk by Drew Maus. That would be the last batter Raff faced. Tom Longoni came in and walked Ryan Wade and pinch-hitter JoeDan Poulter delivered a double to right-center, plating Maus and giving Ouachita Baptist a 3-2 lead.

Ouachita Baptist Baseball leaps nine spots to third!

SAVANNAH, Ga. – It only took just one series for the Ouachita Baptist baseball team to jump back into the top five as the Tigers jumped nine spots to third in the latest Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II poll.

Ouachita Baptist (3-0), which came into the weekend ranked 12th, completed a series sweep Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field in Austin , Texas , winning a wild affair 18-16. The Tigers on the weekend belted nine home runs with a .374 batting average. Ouachita Baptist won the first two games of the series 8-4 and 11-4.

Ouachita Baptist spoils Hilltoppers offensive explosion, completing the series sweep, 18-16!

AUSTIN, Texas The #28 St. Edward’s baseball team hit its offensive stride but couldn’t hold on to an early lead and dropped a wild game against #12 Ouachita Baptist Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Tigers prevailed in this four-hour long marathon, 18-16.

St. Edward’s (0-3) fell behind early against Ouachita Baptist (3-0). The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning thanks to third baseman Rudy Jovanovski and first baseman Destin Makonnen’s back-to-back home runs. Ouachita Baptist scored three more runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth to push their lead to 7-0, but the Hilltoppers would answer with a big inning of their own.

St Edwards Hilltoppers drop two against Ouachita Baptist in home opener!

St. Edwards picAUSTIN, Texas The #28 St. Edward’s baseball team dropped two games to #12 Ouachita Baptist Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Tigers took the first game, 8-4, and won the second contest, 11-4.

In game one, St. Edward’s (0-2) never got it going against Ouachita Baptist (2-0). The Tigers starting pitcher, Steve Smith (1-0), went 6.2 innings, giving up five hits, four runs, and striking out eight Hilltopper batters. St. Edward’s only collected six hits in the game. The highlight of the game for the Hilltoppers came in the fifth inning when right fielder Mike Hancock blasted a home run over the right-center field fence.

St. Edwards Baseball set to face #12 Ouachita Baptist in season opener!

AUSTIN, Texas – The 28th-ranked St. Edward’s baseball team will open its 2008 season Saturday afternoon when they host #12 Ouachita Baptist for a three-game series this weekend.

St. Edward’s, who is coming off of a 43-15 record and Heartland Conference Championship season in 2007, will play the Tigers on the first weekend for the second-straight season. Ouachita Baptist took two of three games from the Hilltoppers last season. That was just before the Hilltoppers won a school-record 18-straight games on their way to most wins in a single season.

The Hilltoppers return six position starters from last year’s squad and starting pitcher Patrick Colgan who finished last year with a spotless 12-0 record and 1.97 earned-run average. He was named first-team all-America for his efforts. Senior Bradley Goldsmith, who pounded out a .368 batting average with 60 runs scored and 45 runs batted in, to go along with his team-leading 29 stolen bases, returns to lead a potent offensive attack that averaged seven runs a contest. Goldsmith was named Heartland Conference Player of the Year last season.

St. Edward’s will challenge the Tigers on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The final game of the series will take place Sunday at 12 p.m. All three games will take place at Lucian-Hamilton Field and can be heard live on the St. Edward’s Athletic Website with Cameron Kushwara there to call of the action.
