DALLAS – Three first team All-Americans, including two standouts who have led their respective teams to this week’s NCAA Super Regionals, have been named as finalists for the 2012 Dick Howser Trophy presented by Easton Foundations. Balloting was conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. New White Sox Coach Ventura Boasts College Baseball Ties

The Chicago White Sox put a quick end to their search for a new manager on Thursday, announcing the hiring of Robin Ventura to replace the sometimes polarizing Ozzie Guillen. Ventura, a former White Sox third baseman, will take over a team that went 79-83 in 2011.

Ventura has significant ties to college baseball. This past season, Ventura contributed analysis to ESPN’s coverage of the NCAA Tournament. In addition, he served on the advisory board for the Capital One Cup, an ranking and reward system for all Division I sports programs. Ventura is also a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, and earned both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award during his Oklahoma State career. Continue reading

Dick Howser Trophy Campus Salute to Rice’s Anthony Rendon Set for this Saturday

AnthonyRendonRiceDALLAS, Texas – The Dick Howser Trophy Committee will present its on-campus salute to 2010 Dick Howser Trophy winner Anthony Rendon of Rice this Saturday, October 16 at the Owls’ football game against Houston at Rice Stadium.

In addition to being honored as the winner at the conclusion of the college baseball season, each Howser Trophy winner is saluted once again on his campus the following academic year so that fans and administrators at his school can be a part of recognizing his achievements.  Rendon will be re-presented the Howser Trophy by Jana Howser, daughter of Dick Howser and Executive Vice-President of the College Baseball Foundation, and Bo Carter, Executive Director of the NCBWA, during the first quarter of the Rice-UH football game which airs regionally on CSS.

Rice’s Anthony Rendon wins 2010 Dick Howser Award

DickHowserAwardPhoto LUBBOCK, Texas – Rice sophomore third baseman Anthony Rendon is the recipient of the 24th annual Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year. The presentation was made Friday evening in Lubbock, Texas as part of the festivities to recognize and induct the College Baseball Hall of Fame and the awarding of several other national honors for 2010.

Rendon is just the second player in Conference USA history to be named Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He picked up that honor again this year while leading the Owls to the regular season league championship and the school’s 16th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. The two-time first team All-CUSA selection was named to the C-USA Championship All-Tournament team and was named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Austin Regional. The Houston native was also named the Male Athlete of the Year for all sports in Conference USA.

2010 Dick Howser Award Finalists

OMAHA, Neb. – Miami (Fla.) catcher Yasmani Grandal, Mississippi pitcher Drew Pomeranz and Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon have been named as finalists for the 2010 Dick Howser Trophy in balloting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

The winner of the Howser Trophy will be announced in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2, during the College Baseball Awards Show, held at the United Spirit Arena and shown on MLB.com. The nationally broadcasted event will follow the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 1 in Lubbock.
