NCBWA Names 2012 Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

2012 NCBWA Preseason All-American Teams Announced

WICHITA, Kan. – One of the youngest groups in the decade-plus history of selections, the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America team has a strong element of 2011 NCAA World Series returnees and loads of exceptional 2012 season sophomores and juniors.

After back-to-back NCAA titles for South Carolina and numerous defections to the professional ranks in ‘11, the 2012 projected team may be a mini-view of the NCAA World Series next June. Continue reading


Top 100 Countdown: 50. Corey Knebel (Texas)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 50 with Texas sophomore RHP Corey Knebel. The Georgetown, Texas native attended Georgetown High School where he earned one letter for head coach Danny Wallace. As a senior at Georgetown, he was named first team All-District. He spent his first three years at Bastrop High School playing for Ben Gittenger. Continue reading


CBD Column: Checking out 2011 Team USA (Pitchers)

Senior writer Kat Cornetta and myself both had the opportunity to take in a couple of game of the USA Collegiate National Team’s tour throughout New England last week. On Saturday night, we made the trip to Holyoke, Massachusetts to see the Holyoke Blue Sox take on the USA squad but the weather would not agree with us as only one pitch was thrown before the skies opened up. On Sunday evening, the National team made the trek to Lynn, Massachusetts to play against the North Shore Navigators. Team USA walked away with a 4-1 win. The next afternoon the National team took on an NECBL Select squad which won 4-3 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. This is the first of a two part series of post focusing on pitchers. Texas’ Corey Knebel Named 2011 NCBWA Stopper of the Year

OMAHA, Neb. — Texas relief pitcher Corey Knebel is the 2011 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Tuesday at the College World Series.

Knebel, the NCBWA Freshman Pitcher of the Year and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, set the Texas freshmen record with 19 saves and was 3-2 with a 1.13 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. He allowed just 28 hits and seven earned runs, while holding opponents to a .151 batting average. With two saves in Super Regional play, he has posted the most saves of any pitcher in the nation this season. In addition, he has made 38 appearances, the most in the Big 12 this year. NCBWA Names 2011 National Freshmen Players of the Year

LYNCHBURG, VA. (NCBWA) – College of Charleston outfielder Daniel Aldrich and Texas right-handed pitcher Corey Knebel have been named the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman Hitter and Pitcher of the Year recipients, as announced by the organization today.

Aldrich hit .347 and led all Division I freshmen in home runs (22), RBI (73), slugging percentage (.739) and total bases (164). The outfielder was selected the 2011 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and named to All-SoCon first team. He had 25 multi-hit games on the season and posted a team-best 17-game hitting streak in February and March. Continue reading
