Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 1st-3rd)

With the last weekend before conference play in the books, Creighton (20-5), Illinois State (19-7), and Bradley (17-8), sit atop the MVC standings with only their midweek matchups to prepare them for next weekend. Noticeably, Wichita State (18-11) has dropped out of the top-3 and now sits in fifth place behind Evansville (15-9). AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Longhorns demonstrated their offensive firepower with a season-high runs total to defeat the Texas State Bobcats, 12-2, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk field.

The Longhorns were led offensively by freshman Kevin Lusson who went 4-for-4 and with a walk on the night and scored five runs. Lusson had two doubles and two RBI. All of these numbers were career-highs for the Austin native.

MALIBU, Calif. – Chicago State baseball managed to split a doubleheader with No. 17 Pepperdine Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif., winning the first game by a score of 6-4 before dropping an 11-1 decision in the second contest. The Cougars improved to 2-20 on the season, while the Waves brought their season record to 15-6.

Fresno State. Fresno State lost two of three against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene this weekend. In game one on Friday the Bulldogs lost a pitching duel 1-0 on Friday. Oregon’s Andrew Schmidt hit a walk-off single with two outs giving the Ducks the victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,777. Holden Sprague pitched 7.2 innings giving up just four hits and walking just one.

On Saturday Oregon’s bats pushed them to a 7-1 victory over Fresno State. The Ducks scored two runs in the bottom of the second, three in the bottom of the third and added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Fresno State starter Sean Bonesteele lasted just 2.1 innings giving up five runs, all earned and allowed five hits. He also walked four batters.

The 2009 baseball season begins Friday with 11 of the 12 Southland Conference teams in action. Texas State is the first conference team to play Friday, meeting Arkansas State in the UT Arlington/Hilton Invitational at 11 a.m., CDT. Stephen F. Austin, the lone league team not opening its season on Friday, tosses out its first pitch Saturday at 7 p.m. at Louisiana-Monroe at the ULM Warhawk Classic. Saturday’s Southland schedule features four doubleheaders. Lamar, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA all have a twin bill scheduled. All 12 schools are in action on Sunday.
