FRONT ROYAL, Va., July 8, 2007 – Woodstock’s Shayne Moody drove in both runs while Front Royal’s Bennett Davis doubled and scored a run to lead the North All-Stars to a 2-0 shutout over the South All-Stars in the 2007 Valley Baseball League All-Star Game on Sunday evening at Bing Crosby Stadium.
Davis, who was also hit by a pitch, was named Most Valuable Player of the North squad in a pitching-dominated game. Just seven total hits were recorded in the game. Davis and South MVP Zach Barrett of Staunton were the only players to hit an extra-base hit, each with doubles.
The North squad was composed of players from Fauquier, Front Royal, Haymarket, Luray, Winchester, and Woodstock. The South included the two best teams in the Valley League in Waynesboro and Harrisonburg, along with Covington, New Market, and Staunton.
The first run of the game came in the third after Davis led off with a double. He advanced to third with two outs and came in to score on Moody’s sacrifice fly to center field. The other run came in the fifth inning. After the North loaded the bases on a walk, hit batter, and bunt single, Moody hit into a fielder’s choice to score Fauquier’s Jeffrey Hartwig.
No pitcher worked more than an inning in the ball game with 23 total hurlers seeing action. Robert Gilliam of Luray earned the victory as the pitcher when the first run was scored. Covington’s Robbie Andrews allowed the run to take the loss.
The evening also included a home run derby, which was won by Covington’s Jason Kipnis. Haymarket’s Spencer Wiggins won the 60-yard dash.
The Gamecocks finished off a perfect weekend by eliminating the Charlotte 49ers 11-6 in the Columbia (SC) regional. The Gamecocks were led by a strong game from Phil Disher who hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to erase a three run deficit and give the Gamecocks the lead for good as they cruised to victory. South Carolina now heads to UNC for a Super Regional showdown while Charlotte ends the season with a 49-12 record.

The NC State Wolfpack continued their season after knocking off Wofford 10-6 in an elimination game in the Columbia SC regional. Jeremy Synan went 2-3 including a home run and three RBI to lead the Wolfpack offense. NC State will play Charlotte later on Sunday evening. Wofford ends the season with a 30-33 record after a great run in the Southern Conference.

South Carolina 12 Charlotte 8
South Carolina jumped out to a 11-1 lead and cruised to a 12-8 victory over the visiting 49ers. Justin Smoak, Trent Kline, and Andrew Crisp all hit homers to lead the Gamecocks attack. Charlotte will play an elimination game on Sunday evening for a chance to play in the Regional championship on Monday.

Charlotte 12 NC State 10
The NC State Wolfpack were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after losing to Charlotte 12-10. The 49ers got seven runs in the second inning including a Kris Rochelle three run homer. The 49ers will have to defeat South Carolina twice on Monday in the Regional Final while SC will only have to get one win to advance to the Super Regionals.

Adam Mills continued his strong season pitching seven innings while giving up two unearned runs as the 49ers won their first NCAA Regional game. Charlotte’s offense was led by Kris Rochelle went 3-3 with one run scored. Charlotte advances to play South Carolina while NC State will play Wofford.

Justin Smoak hit two homers and Reese Havens drove in three runs as the Gamecocks won 9-1 over Wofford. Harris Honeycutt pitched seven strong innings while only giving up the one run. South Carolina will take on Charlotte in the winner’s bracket while Wofford will play NC State on Saturday in an elimination game.

The Gamecocks are coming off the SEC Tournament in which they went 1-2 with a victory over Florida which was bookended by losses to Arkansas. They are led by one of the top sophomores in the country in Justin Smoak. He is considered one of the top two players in the country with Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt. He is hitting at .304 for the season with 18 homers. James Darnell leads the team in hitting with a .338 average and also has 18 homers on the season. Arik Hempy leads the starting pitchers with a 5-3 record and an ERA of 2.87. They open the tournament on Friday at 7 pm when they take on Wofford.
South Carolina Game Notes
NC State heads down the road to South Carolina to take part in the NCAA Regional. The Wolfpack went 1-2 in the ACC Tournament with a victory over Georgia Tech and picked up a losses to Virginia and North Carolina. The Wolfpack are led by catcher Caleb Mangum who is hitting .286 but is solid behind the plate. Ryan Pond leads the team in hitting with a .330 average and six homers. Eric Surkamp leads the starting pitchers with an ERA of 3.18 and a 4-4 overall record. They also have one of the top draft picks in their rotation with Andrew Brackman but he struggled throughout the year with his control as his record stands at 6-4 with a 3.81 ERA. The CBB saw the Wolfpack twice this season in which Brackman pitched in Game 2 and Jimmy Gillheeney pitched Game 3 of the series with Boston College. NC State will play Charlotte at 2 pm on Friday.

The Charlotte 49ers (47-10) will take part in the NCAA tournament after winning the Atlantic 10 conference tournament and receiving the automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. Charlotte is led by All-American pitcher Adam Mills who leads the team with an 1.07 ERA in 17 games. He has a record of 13-2 with four shutouts and an opponents batting average of .186. Brad McElroy leads the offense with a .412 batting average. They open up the tournament at 2 pm on Friday when they take on in-state rival NC State at 2 pm.

Wofford (30-31) enter this weekend as the Southern Conference Tournament Champion as they won the tournament as the number 9 seed. They are led by Brandon Waring who is hitting .405 on the season with 27 home runs. (That is not an error.) Ben Austin is 11-5 with a 4.03 ERA in 17 starts. They will open the tournament by taking on South Carolina at 7 pm on Friday.
Wofford Tourney Notes
The CBB predicts that South Carolina will win the regional but Charlotte will give them a run for the money as the 49ers pitchers are some of the best in the country.
Tim Fedroff went 3-4 with four RBIs as the North Carolina Tar Heels held on for a 8-7 victory over Winthrop. Winthrop scored three runs in the top of the ninth but UNC was able to get the final out without letting the tying run score. Adam Warren pitched 4.2 innings while giving up three runs to up his record to 10-0. Winthrop reliever Ryan Mullins get the loss as he gave up three runs in 2/3 of an inning. His record drops to 4-5 on the season. North Carolina will be back in action on Friday when they head to Maryland to finish off the regular season while Winthrop hosts Coastal Carolina for a three game set also on Friday.
North Carolina AT 13 Duke 9
North Carolina AT picked up a 13-9 extra innings victory over the Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday evening. NC AT picked up four hits and a walk in the top of the eleventh to put across four runs and get the win over the Blue Devils in Durham. NC AT reliever Ron Phelps picked up the win by pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. The Aggie offense was led by Joe McIntyre who went 5-6 with four runs scored and drove in four runs. Duke reliever Ryan Perry got the loss to put his record at 0-1. Duke will be back in action this weekend when they head to Miami while NC AT will play in the MEAC Baseball Tourney.
Coastal Carolina 11 Virginia 7
Coastal Carolina continued their strong season with a solid 11-7 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers. The Chanticleers got 20 hits in the game with every starter getting at least a hit while they knocked out UVA starter Jeff Lorick out of the game after only 2/3 of an inning while giving up five runs (four earned). Lorick’s record drops his first game of the year to put his record at 2-1. Coastal Carolina starter David Anderson only lasted five innings but only gave up three runs in the game. His record goes to 5-3. Anderson also had a strong game at the plate as he went 4-6. Sean Doolittle and David Adams each had three hits to lead the Cavaliers offense. Coastal Carolina will end the regular season this weekend when they visit Winthrop while Virginia heads to Boston College.

Clemson 19 College of Charleston 7
The Clemson Tigers took care of College of Charleston by a score of 19-7 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. Taylor Harbin led the tigers by going 3-4 with 6 RBI while Clemson starter P. J. Zocchi gave up five runs in five innings but got the win to up his record to 4-2. COC starter Michael Bunton (4-1) was lit up for nine runs in 3.2 innings to get the loss. Clemson will head to NC State while College of Charleston will host Davidson.

Charlotte 9 Virginia Tech 3
The Charlotte 49ers got 13 hits and took advantage of three VT errors as they cruised over Virginia Tech 9-3. Charlotte was led on offense by Chris Taylor who went 2-5 with two RBI. Charlotte starting pitcher Luke Stahl (2-0) went five innings while giving up three unearned runs to get the victory. Rob Whitley (2-2) gave up six runs in four innings for the Hokies and picked up the loss. Charlotte will head to Richmond while Virginia Tech hosts Wake Forest.
NC State 7 UNC-Asheville 4
Caleb Mangum hit a three run homer in the seventh inning which brought home the game winning RBI in a 7-4 victory over UNC-Asheville. Mangum led the Wolfpack by going 2-3 with 3 RBI while Pack reliever Joey Cutler (3-0) got the win while giving up two runs in three innings of work. Dan Weller (1-1) gave up four runs in 1/3 of an inning to get the loss. Kevin Mattison led the offensive attack for UNCA by going 2-4 with a homer and three RBI. NC State will host Clemson while UNC-Asheville heads to UNC-Greensboro on Wednesday to close out the regular season.

The North Carolina Tar Heels rolled over East Carolina 10-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Adam Warren who went seven shutout innings to up his record to 8-0. Tim Fedroff picked up four RBI to lead the UNC offense. UNC will be back in action on Wednesday when they host High Point before going to NC State for a key ACC showdown. East Carolina will be back in action this weekend when they host Southern Mississippi.

The Phoenix were able to edge the Clemson Tigers 13-12 in a classic slugfest in Clemson SC. Pat Irvine went 2-2 with 3 RBI including a homer and teammate Mike Melillo picked up a homer to lead the Phoenix offense to the victory. Doug Hogan went 2-3 with 5 RBI including a homer to lead the Clemson offense in the loss. Elon will host UNC-Greensboro for a weekend series while Clemson plays South Carolina on Wednesday.
Wake Forest 3 Charlotte 2 (11 innings)
Brett Linnenkohl hit a homer in the top of the 11th inning to give the Wake Forest Demon Deacons a 3-2 lead and Josh Ellis pitched a scoreless bottom of the 11th to break a three game losing streak for the Deacons. Aaron Bray led the 49ers with three hits while Evan Ocheltree went 2-4. Wake Forest will head to Appalchin State on Wednesday while Charlotte will head to George Washington for a conference series on Friday.
Duke 12 Campbell 0
Nate Freiman hit two homers and Jimmy Gallagher went 5-6 only a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Blue Devils to the 12-0 victory over Campbell. Jonathan Anderson got the victory on the mound by pitching five scoreless innings. Duke will be off until Friday when they head to Wake Forest while Campbell hosts Gardner-Webb in a conference series.
Georgia 10 Georgia Tech 7
The Bulldogs picked up a 10-7 victory over Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs were led by Matt Olson who went 4-5 with six RBI. The Bulldogs jumped on GA Tech starter John Goodman who only lasted 1.1 innings while giving up four runs on two hits and three walks to drop his record to 1-2 on the season. Jason Leaver picked up the victory by pitching going his scheduled three innings while giving up three runs. His record goes to 1-1 on the season. Josh Fields who has struggled throughout the season pitched a scoreless ninth to get his fourth save of the season. Georgia Tech will host Clemson for a weekend series while Georgia plays at Western Carolina on Wednesday.
West Virginia 13 Maryland 2
The West Virginia Mountaineers blew out the Maryland Terrapins 13-2 in a battle between the Big East and ACC. West Virginia used a 16 hit attack led by Tyler Kuhn who went 3-6 with four RBI in the win. Maryland starter Mike Sufczynski picked up the loss to drop his record to 0-2 while Josh Whitlock got the win by pitching eight innings while allowing only two runs to up his record to 6-3. West Virginia is back in action on Friday when they host St. John’s while Maryland will head to Virginia on Friday.
The James Madison Dukes scored four runs on wild pitches as they took a non-conference game from Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Matt Browning went 3-4 with two runs scored to lead the Dukes offense. The Hokie offense was led by Nate Parks who also went 3-4 with one run scored. The Hokies will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Radford while JMU visits UVA on Wednesday.
The College Baseball Blog will be making the trip down to Kingston RI to check in on the Charlotte 49ers and Rhode Island Rams on Saturday. The 49ers enter the weekend ranked as the 25th team in the country by the NCBWA. The 49ers have an overall record of 26-6 and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10. The 49ers weekend starters all have ERA’s under 2.66.

The CBB will try to head to Cambridge on Sunday (weather permitting) to take in the Harvard-Yale doubleheader which is a key Red Rolfe Division showdown in the Ivy League Conference. The Crimson have a 5-3 record in the conference while Yale is 3-5. Both teams are looking to pick up some key wins hoping to get into the Ivy League Championship series at the end of the year.
Seth Williams hit a three run homer to break a tie at 3 in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Tar Heels to a 6-3 victory over Charlotte on Tuesday. The Tar Heels got 5.2 scoreless innings of relief from Matt Danford and Andrew Carignan. UNC was led on offense by Freshman All-American candidate Dustin Ackley who continued his hitting steak to 27 games by going 3-4 with an RBI. Charlotte’s offensive star was Chris Lane who was perfect in his three plate appearances with an RBI. UNC will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Elon while Charlotte will host Presbyterian before going to URI this weekend. The CBB might check out Charlotte this weekend.
