The Wake Forest Demon Deacons used a two run homer in the bottom of the tenth inning by Tyler Smith to give them an exciting 9-7 victory over the Charlotte 49ers. This was Smith’s first at bat on the season and he produced in a big way. Charlotte starter Spencer Steedley had a rough outing by going 6+ innings while giving up six runs (only five earned). Ryan Hamilton picked up the loss for the 49ers by going 2.0 innings and gave up the two run homer. Ben Hunter picked up the win for the Demon Deacons by giving them 2.2 scoreless innings of relief while only giving up one hit to pick up his first victory of the young season.
The Charlotte 49ers took out the Virginia Tech Hokies by a score of 11-0. This is the 49ers second consecutive shutout to extend their scoreless streak to 23 innings. This was the Hokies first game under new Head Coach Peter Hughes who left Boston College last season. Coach Hughes has not changed anything in his coaching style with two runners thrown out but they were able to get two stolen bases in the game. I still wonder if Peter Hughes style of baseball will be successful in the ACC.
The NCBWA has released their National Players of the Week for the period ending on February 11th. Pedro Alvarez was named the Player of the Week with an outstanding weekend in Houston at the Minute Maid College Classic. He went 7-14 in a 3 game sweep over Rice, Baylor, and Arizona State. Charlotte left-handed pitcher Spencer Steedley was named the National Pitcher of the Week after pitching a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts and no walks in a 8-0 victory. He did not allow any runners past second base and scattered seven hits.
